Inside Trump's big midterm gamble that Republicans fear nobody watched

Trump's first-ever GOP midterm convention ended with polished speeches and a key question: Did anyone beyond the party faithful tune in?

DALLAS, TEXAS: Republicans gathered in Dallas for President Donald Trump's first-ever midterm convention, hoping to energize voters ahead of November.

When the two-day event ended, however, some GOP operatives were left asking whether the party's biggest production of the campaign had reached anyone outside the arena.

The convention, held on September 9 and 10 at the American Airlines Center, was an unusual move for a midterm year.

National party conventions are typically reserved for presidential elections, but Trump took the stage on both nights and urged Republicans to treat the upcoming vote as though he were on the ballot.

Republicans liked the production

By most accounts, the event itself went smoothly.

Republicans praised the production, which featured major speeches, security, entertainment, and a signature balloon drop.

GOP strategist Mark Bednar told Politico that there was “a lot of buzz between members, donors, and activists.”

Another Republican strategist involved in midterm races offered a more measured assessment, saying the convention went “basically as well as it could have.”

“No harm done, but also doesn't change much of anything,” the strategist said.

The gathering was designed to unite the party, showcase Republican candidates and motivate Trump's supporters, particularly voters who turn out in presidential elections but may be less likely to vote in midterms.

Trump's ballot message worried some

Trump repeatedly asked voters to imagine that he was personally on the ballot in November.

The message was aimed at boosting enthusiasm among his base, but some Republicans reportedly worried it could create problems for candidates in competitive districts who need support from independents and Democrats.

One GOP county chair told Politico that Trump's message could encourage voters who oppose the president to vote against Republican congressional candidates.

A House Republican similarly said the strategy could help energize the base but was unlikely to benefit candidates trying to win over swing voters.

The convention also gave Trump a platform to promote a proposed $5,000 payment to American adults if Republicans retain control of Congress, though the idea faced skepticism from some Republicans concerned about its cost and the federal deficit.

The NFL raised a question

For some Republicans, the biggest question came after the speeches, chants and balloons were over: Who actually watched?

One GOP operative told Politico that the event lacked a moment powerful enough to spread widely online. Another person pointed to competition from NFL games airing during both nights of the convention.

“I don't think it mattered,” the person said. “No one watched. The NFL is unbeatable for TV.”
