Trump's midterm takeover is giving Republicans something new to worry about

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump is preparing an aggressive campaign for the 2026 midterm elections, saying he plans to campaign in 35 races and spend hundreds of millions of dollars to help Republican candidates.

Trump has also pushed the Republican Party to hold a midterm convention in Dallas, where he is scheduled to speak on both nights. Republican campaign officials and consultants have privately raised concerns about his involvement in competitive races.

One GOP campaign official told Axios, “We have no choice. We’re stuck on the boat with him whether we like it or not.”

Trump plans visits across 35 races

Trump told dozens of House Republicans at a Rose Garden dinner that he plans to campaign across the country in 35 races.

He said he wants to “see if we can get everyone elected.” 

A consultant involved in discussions with MAGA Inc, Trump’s political operation, said candidates could find it difficult to reject an offer of help from the president.

Trump has also told a confidant, “I’m not on the ballot, but I’m on the ballot.” 

His campaign operation has argued that the election should focus on his record and encourage Trump supporters to vote in the midterms.

Republicans are weighing Trump's involvement

Republican officials have described concerns about how Trump’s appearances could affect candidates in competitive districts.

One consultant told Axios that candidates face a choice between accepting Trump’s support and declining it.

“Say no to Trump, and he could punish you,” the consultant said. “Say yes to him, and his presence might not help.”

Another Republican campaign official said the party needs Trump voters to participate in the election.

The official said Republicans are “stuck on the boat with him,” while noting that the White House is more confident about the strategy than some campaign officials.

Dallas convention puts Trump front and center

Republicans are holding a midterm convention in Dallas on September 9 and 10, an event created at Trump’s urging.

Trump and Vice President JD Vance are scheduled to headline the gathering, with Trump expected to speak on both nights. 

Trump told the 'Lt Dan' podcast, hosted by Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, that he came up with the idea after noticing that presidential elections have conventions while midterm elections do not.

Several Republican candidates have decided not to attend, according to reports. 

The convention also coincides with the opening week of the NFL season.

Trump says he has $1 billion

Trump said he has about $1 billion available through his political operation and plans to allocate between $400 million and $500 million toward the midterms.

He said the money would help Republican House and Senate candidates who need support.

Trump’s political operation has already released two television advertisements. 

One focuses heavily on Trump, while another promotes tax cuts and includes the president.

Republican strategists have also raised concerns about economic issues affecting candidates.

Gas prices have risen as the Iran conflict disrupts energy markets, while Trump has continued to defend his economic record.

Midterms will decide Congress

The November 3 election will determine control of the House and Senate.

Republicans currently hold majorities in both chambers and are defending seats in competitive districts and states.

Trump has acknowledged that presidents historically face losses in their first midterm elections.

He has nevertheless said Republicans can win the races they are targeting and has pledged to campaign for candidates who need his support.

The election will determine which party controls congressional committees and votes on legislation, spending and administration priorities after January.
