Trump fatigue is real, MAGA Rep warns, and Republicans may pay the price

WASHINGTON, DC: A leaked recording has put Oklahoma Rep Stephanie Bice in an uncomfortable spotlight after the Trump-endorsed Republican was heard discussing what she described as growing voter frustration and the possibility that some Republicans could stay home during the midterm elections.

The audio, first reported by The Bulwark, captured Bice speaking with students at Oklahoma State University about the political challenges facing her party.

While her campaign later stressed that she remains a strong supporter of President Donald Trump, the comments offered a rare account of concerns being discussed within Republican circles as the party looks ahead to the elections.

Leaked remarks raise Republican concerns

According to the recording, Bice questioned whether some of Trump's actions were helping Republicans make their case to voters.

She specifically mentioned the president's reported push to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” and his disputes involving Canada. 

“We’re not helping ourselves today,” Bice said, according to The Bulwark, adding that such moves did not help the party's broader political message.

Bice represents Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District, a seat rated R+9 by the Cook Political Report.

But she indicated that even lawmakers in Republican-leaning districts could face problems if voters become disengaged.

'Trump fatigue' becomes a warning

The congresswoman also recounted a conversation with a Republican executive who told her he was experiencing “Trump fatigue.”

“I’m a Republican. I’ve been a Republican for a long time, but I have Trump fatigue,” Bice quoted the executive as saying, adding that she believed it was “a fair statement.”

Bice has been one of his allies in Congress and received Trump's endorsement for her reelection bid earlier this year.

The bigger fear is turnout

Bice said her greater concern was not necessarily that Republican voters would switch parties, but that some might simply decide not to vote.

She told students that she was already hearing from people who disliked Trump and were reconsidering how they would approach the ballot.

Some could split their tickets, she said, while others might skip the election altogether.

“That’ll impact me,” Bice said, according to the recording.

Campaign pushes back on interpretation

Bice's reelection campaign rejected the suggestion that the recording showed a break between the congresswoman and Trump.

A spokesman said she was relaying someone else's comment while discussing the importance of voting for the entire Republican ticket.

The campaign also pointed to Bice's support for Trump's policies on border security, the economy, and the military, saying she was proud to have his endorsement.
