WASHINGTON, DC: California Governor Gavin Newsom says President Donald Trump' team keeps sending him “Trump 2028” hats.

This revelation has fueled speculation that Trump is seriously planning a third presidential run, despite the constitutional two-term limit.

Speaking at Politico’s California Summit, Newsom pointed to the hats and Trump’s reported $200 million spend on a ballroom at the White House as evidence that the president is preparing for a 2028 campaign.

During an interview at Politico’s California Summit, Governor Gavin Newsom raised alarms about Donald Trump’s apparent desire for a third presidential term.

He began, "I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election. This guy doesn’t believe in free, fair elections."

He pointed to a curious sign, “I have two dozen Trump 2028 hats his folks keep sending me."

When Politico’s Christopher Cadelago asked whether Trump might actually attempt a third run, despite the 22nd Amendment’s two-term limit, Newsom didn’t hold back.

“Who spends $200 million on a ballroom at their home and then leaves?” he said. “This is serious, guys. This guy doesn’t believe in free and fair elections; he tried to wreck this country. He tried to light democracy on fire... Now he’s doing it in plain sight."

“The rule of law is being replaced by the rule of Don,” Newsom declared

Newsom has continued to troll Trump online. On Tuesday, he posted a screenshot of a conversation with Grok, asking, “Do people with dementia repeat false things over and over again?” a jab at Trump following his false claim that he had to “turn on the water” for California during recent wildfires.

While the Constitution limits presidents to two terms, an amendment ratified in 1951 after Franklin D Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms, Trump has kept the idea of a third run in public conversation.

In March, he told NBC’s Kristen Welker that he would “probably not” seek a third term, but hinted at loopholes. “A lot of people want me to do it,” he said. “But we have—my thinking is, we have a long way to go. I’m focused on the current.”

After Gavin Newsom spoke about Trump possibly seeking a third presidential term, internet users quickly flooded social media with reactions.

One user wrote, "Ahhahaa... does he realize Trump can't run again. His platform isn't what he can do for the country. It's Trump. Bad me good. Don't think that will get him elected. All anyone has to do is look at Gavin's record. It ain't good."

One individual explained, "Of course he will run- why else is Mr. Trump ensuring that he can use the National Guard to step in and ensure that he wins and any protests are quickly put down- and where will he put citizens? In the very alligator allies he's building all over the country."

A commenter elaborated, "Largely immaterial, most likely. With all the glaring health issues stacking up, he won’t be constitutionally viable, in he’s even still vertical, by then. President is no easy job for anyone. For those teetering on the edge, it’s a sledgehammer. Example: the last guy."

A user suspected, "If Trump runs then so can Obama." One more commenter shared, "Newsom should as Trump on X if he would like to be his VP in the 2028 election." A user wrote, "0 % chance of winning."

A Trump supporter shared, "26,000 homes destroyed in LA and only 226 permits issued to rebuild, one year after the fires in LA. Gavin Newsom is losing. End of story!"
