WASHINGTON, DC: California Governor Gavin Newsom took a dig at President Donald Trump after the Department of Labor unfurled two new banners featuring him and former President Theodore Roosevelt.

The banners come after the POTUS mobilized the National Guard to work with the DC metropolitan police to stamp out crime, homelessness, and undocumented immigration.

The banner, which features Trump's second inaugural portrait, along with the logo for Trump’s America 250 programming and the motto "American Workers First", drapes over the windows of three stories of the building, viral images show.

Apart from it, an American flag and a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt with the same text is hung beside it.

Interestingly, the Department of Labour has undergone drastic cuts and pursued an agenda hostile to unions and workers under the POTUS.

Moreover, this is not the first time a government building has displayed Trump’s picture. A banner with the same portrait, alongside one of Abraham Lincoln, was hung on the Department of Agriculture building earlier in 2025.

Earlier in August, Trump invoked the Home Rule Act, which gave the executive branch the power to control the police for 30 days before asking Congress the permission to extend the control.

However, a recent survey conducted by The Washington Post/Schar School showed 79 percent of residents either somewhat or strongly oppose these measures, as 17 percent were in favor.

Moreover, only 31 percent of respondents described the city's crime level as either "extremely serious" or "very serious", which is a significant decrease from 65 percent in an April 2024 survey.

Furthermore, a total of 78 percent of residents reported feeling "very" or "somewhat" safe in their neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, just 21 percent expressed feeling not too safe or not at all safe.

Democrats slam Trump for banners at Department of Labour

California Governor Gavin Newsom slammed Donald Trump's administration on Monday, August 25, after the Department of Labor unfurled two new banners featuring Trump and Theodore Roosevelt.

Newsom's press office tweeted, "THANK YOU, GLORIOUS LEADER", alongside a photo of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and his father, Kim Jong-il.

Meanwhile, the Ohio Communist Party posted, "Trump has never been on the side of workers. Trump promised to protect steelworkers' jobs, but he didn’t. Trump also violated the collective bargaining rights of millions of federal workers."

"Not to mention the upcoming cuts to Social Security. Don’t be fooled," they added.

Robert Reich, who served as the secretary of labor in President Bill Clinton's cabinet, also slammed the decision to unfurl the banners.

"Trump’s Labor Department is aiming to rewrite or repeal 60+ worker protections, including: Minimum wage for home health care workers, Rules that improve construction & mine safety, OSHA’s ability to punish employers for unsafe workplaces," he said.

Reich added, "The 'pro-worker' president."

Moreover, a third person stated, "Another authoritarian stunt—Trump hanging his own banners on government buildings. If Obama or Biden ever did this, Republicans would LOSE THEIR MINDS."
