George Clooney calls White House to defend wife Amal after Joe Biden slammed her work on Israel warrants
WASHINGTON, DC: It was revealed on Thursday, June 6, that George Clooney called the White House and criticized a Joe Biden aide following the president's condemnation of his lawyer wife's efforts to imprison Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Amal Clooney had endorsed the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor's request last month for an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and other Israel and Hamas leaders, which was labeled as "outrageous."
Joe Biden believes there is 'no moral equivalence' between Israel and Hamas
An incensed Joe Biden maintains there is "no moral equivalence" between Israel and Hamas and suggested sanctions against the court, which could have resulted in the deportation of Clooney's wife from the US.
The Oscar-winning actor expressed his anger after being connected to Biden's senior counselor, Steve Ricchetti, as reported by the Washington Post, and his prominent wife continues to be unapologetic about her involvement.
"I do not accept that any conflict should be beyond the reach of the law, nor that any perpetrator should be above the law," she remarked.
The renowned couple has consistently been prominent supporters of the president, with the actor contributing over $500,000 to Biden's 2020 campaign, according to Daily Mail.
Additionally, he co-hosted a virtual fundraiser that raised $7 million for the campaign.
However, recent controversies have raised questions about his participation in one of Biden's major 2024 fundraising events next Saturday, June 8, where he is scheduled to appear as a leading guest at an LA gala with former President Barack Obama, TV host Jimmy Kimmel, and actress Julia Roberts.
House passes bill to impose sanctions on ICC
In response to the court's unprecedented actions this week, the House passed a bill to impose sanctions on the court. However, the White House has moderated its initial indignation, stating that sanctions are not the suitable response to the court's actions.
It stated that it would "strongly oppose" a bill that it says "could require sanctions against court staff, judges, witnesses, and US allies and partners who provide even limited, targeted support to the court in a range of aspects of its work."
Netanyahu was invited to address both chambers of Congress last week, and House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized Biden for his reversal.
"It's alarming that the Biden administration continues to undermine Israel and now, 155 House Democrats have voted to give the ICC a free pass to target our allies and undermine US national security interests," he stated.
The controversy began on May 20 when it was revealed that Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, and two other Hamas leaders would be charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity by court prosecutor Karim Khan.
"Starvation as a method of warfare, together with other attacks and collective punishment against the civilian population of Gaza," he charged the Israeli government of doing.
"They include malnutrition, dehydration, profound suffering and an increasing number of deaths among the Palestinian population, including babies, other children, and women," he added.
Amal Clooney praised ICC's decision to bring justice to victims of atrocities in Israel and Palestine
It was revealed that Amal Clooney, an esteemed human rights attorney, was among the six legal experts who assisted British prosecutor Karim Khan in his decision-making process.
"I support the historic step that the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has taken to bring justice to victims of atrocities in Israel and Palestine," she said in a statement issued by the couple's Clooney Foundation.
"As a human rights lawyer, I will never accept that one child's life has less value than another's. I do not accept that any conflict should be beyond the reach of the law, nor that any perpetrator should be above the law."
The actor and the president have known each other for years and the couple visited the White House in December 2022 when he was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors.
Months later Biden appointed him to the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
Neither Israel or the US recognize the court but, if the warrant is issued, Netanyahu, Gallant and the Hamas leaders face arrest should they visit any of the 122 countries that do.
More than 36,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since it invaded the Palestinian enclave in response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack that claimed the lives of 1,200 people.
Israel has slammed the court's move as a 'baseless blood libel' against the country, while President Isaac Herzog called the move "outrageous," insisting it 'cannot be accepted by anyone."
"The blood libel will not deter Israel from defending itself and accomplishing all its just war objectives in Gaza," an Israeli official added. Hamas too rejected the courts move saying it "strongly denounces the attempts of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to equate the victim with the executioner."
