WASHINGTON, DC: George Clooney praised President Joe Biden for showing "true leadership" by exiting the 2024 White House race following his own public push for Biden to drop out.

Clooney's comments came after Biden announced his withdrawal amid calls and age-related concerns about his physical and mental acuity.

George Clooney extends support to vice president Kamala Harris

The actor and previously a Biden fan praised the president's decision, underlining that he is preserving democracy by stepping down.

Clooney also voiced his support for vice president Kamala Harris' presidential campaign.

Clooney, an Academy Award winner and top Democratic fundraiser, said in a statement to CNN on Tuesday, July 23, "President Biden has shown what true leadership is. He’s saving democracy once again."

Clooney also shared his excitement to do "whatever we can to support Harris in her "historic quest."

Earlier this month, Clooney shook Hollywood and the political world with a New York Times op-ed, calling for Biden to end his reelection bid.

In the piece, he argued that Democrats wouldn’t win in November with Biden as their candidate due to concerns about his age.

"Is it fair to point these things out? It has to be. This is about age. Nothing more. But also nothing that can be reversed," said Clooney who had recently hosted a fundraiser for Biden.

Joe Biden endorses Kamala Harris as Democratic nominee

After initially insisting on running, Biden withdrew from the race on Sunday, July 21.

"I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term," Biden said in a statement.

In his announcement, Biden endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee. "My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made," he wrote.

"Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," said Biden.

Kamala, the former attorney general of California, said in a statement that she wishes to "earn and win this nomination." On Monday, July 22, she announced that she was "proud to have earned the support needed to become our party’s nominee."

Internet reacts to George Clooney's remarks on Joe Biden droping out of the presidential race

While Clooney praised Biden's decision, the internet responded with skepticism and criticism.

One user on X wrote, "Yippee, an actor, born into wealth and privilege, detached from the real-world problems of everyday Americans, with no qualifications or credentials whatsoever, has given his endorsement and stamp approval on the coup d’etat."

Another user expressed frustration, saying, "I just want someone to explain to me like I am 12 years old how going against the wishes of the people and installing a candidate who was hand-picked by the cabal is democratic."

The reactions continued with another user writing, "Saving democracy by being forced out? Lol." The sentiment of disapproval was echoed by another individual who questioned, "This was a coup against a sitting president for all the world to see! What did they do to Biden to force him to step down?"

One more critic voiced their opinion: "I'm not a big fan of this definition of democracy where liberal 'elites' ignore voters and select their own candidates." The criticism continued with one commenting, "Saving Democracy by subverting it."
