WASHINGTON, DC: In a surprising turn of events, President Joe Biden, 81, announced his withdrawal from the 2024 US presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s new nominee.

This decision, revealed on Sunday, July 21, has not only reshaped the Democratic primary but has also propelled former First Lady Michelle Obama into the spotlight as a favored alternative to face Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Recent surveys suggest that voters might prefer Michelle Obama over Kamala Harris. According to a poll by The Center Square Voters’ Voice, conducted with Noble Predictive Insights, 24 percent of Democrat-leaning likely voters would choose Obama as their candidate, whereas Harris ranked seventh with only 7 percent.

Despite Biden’s endorsement, former President Barack Obama praised Biden without extending his support to Harris, further fueling speculation, as per the New York Times.

Following Biden’s announcement, social media platforms were abuzz with discussions about Obama potentially stepping into the race. Many users expressed their belief that she is the only candidate capable of defeating Trump in the upcoming election.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) speculated, "I really think they are not going to vote for Kamala at the convention. They are going to vote for guess who, Michelle Obama. Even though Michelle said no, that will be the surprise. No more OBAMA's. So do not be surprised if that happens. This is the trick to fool people."

Another user echoed this sentiment, "Kamala isn't going to be the nominee. My money is on Michelle Obama."

The calls for Obama’s candidacy were varied but unified in their urgency. "Irrespective of race and gender...does anyone really think that she is the right person for the job? She makes no sense. Flip flops to the crowd. Put @MichelleObama up election, she would do the country (and world) well," one user commented.

Another post declared, "As much as we'd like it to happen, let's admit now she will never win. The only person who can even hope to defeat Trump now is @MichelleObama. She's our only hope."

Further fueling the speculation, one user pleaded, "@MichelleObama Please save US. You could ACTUALLY save the world by running for president. Now is your time Superwoman."

Another predicted a strategic shift, "Biden's endorsement is as equivalent to the trash bin. It's the party and fundraisers who decide the candidature. Michelle Obama will be the Presidential candidate from the Democratic party, and they will make it official in the month of August."

The sentiment was clear and widespread. "They gonna sneak Michelle Obama in," stated one user, while another asserted, "only person I see beating Trump is Michelle Obama."

Democratic Party navigates nomination process amidst turbulent circumstances

Former GOP contender Vivek Ramaswamy, who had previously predicted Joe Biden wouldn’t secure the Democratic nomination, stated, "Last year, I predicted Joe Biden wouldn’t be the nominee. Now, I’m predicting Kamala Harris won’t be either. I wouldn’t rule out Michelle Obama becoming the nominee."

In response to Biden’s decision, Democratic National Committee chair Jaime Harrison emphasized the party's commitment to a transparent and orderly nomination process.

"The work that we must do now, while unprecedented, is clear. In the coming days, the party will undertake a transparent and orderly process to move forward as a united Democratic Party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November," Harrison assured.

The Democratic National Committee convention, scheduled to begin on August 19 in Chicago, will see nearly 4,000 delegates from across the country gather to elect their candidate for the November general elections.

While Biden’s endorsement has bolstered Harris’s position, her nomination is not guaranteed until the delegates cast their votes in her favor.

Harrison’s statement reinforced the party’s dedication to a fair process: "This process will be governed by established rules and procedures of the party. Our delegates are prepared to take seriously their responsibility in swiftly delivering a candidate to the American people."
