Internet divided as Joy Reid calls Justice Samuel Alito 'Fox host on court' amid ethics controversies
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: During a segment on June 10, MSNBC host Joy Reid strongly criticized Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, portraying him as a staunch conservative embroiled in numerous ethics controversies related to potential bias and political alignment.
Reid asserted, “We know Alito is essentially a Fox host on the court," further emphasizing that he makes little effort to conceal his political leanings.
“He doesn’t care who knows that he wants to make the country into a Christian nationalist, you know, ethnostate or whatever it is he thinks he would create under this ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ vision,” Reid continued.
Leaked recording reveals Justice Alito's agreement with conservative caller
In a leaked recording that surfaced on June 10, Alito agreed with a woman he believed to be a Catholic conservative, affirming her belief that negotiations with liberals are futile and that the court should be utilized to advance conservative principles.
“On one side or the other — one side or the other is going to win. I don’t know. I mean, there can be a way of working — a way of living together peacefully, but it’s difficult, you know because there are differences on fundamental things that really can’t be compromised. They really can’t be compromised. So it’s not like you are going to split the difference.”
Progressive filmmaker Lauren Windsor recorded the remarks at the Supreme Court Historical Society’s annual dinner on June 3, where she attended the event under her real name but posed as a conservative to gather insights from the judges.
The recordings were subsequently published by Rolling Stone and Windsor’s activist site, The Undercurrent as per the News Nation.
These recordings emerged amid increased scrutiny over the gifts received by Alito and other justices during their tenure on the court.
Recent data revealed that Alito has accepted approximately $140,000 in gifts since 2004, ranking him third among current and former justices in terms of the total value of gifts received during this period.
Reid raises concerns over potential revisiting of Brown v Board of Education
Reid also speculated on June 10 that Alito and the current Supreme Court might soon revisit the landmark Brown v Board of Education decision, particularly in light of Alito's involvement in the 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v Wade, a decision concerning abortion rights.
“Just in reading through the litany of things that Alito has said in the past, he’s criticized the Warren court,” Reid said, “that’s the court that gave us all of the civil rights and women, people of color, immigrants, everything, the disabled, all of that came in the 20th century.”
“You’ve now had Clarence Thomas question whether Brown v Board went too far,” she added.
She was referring to commentary Thomas wrote as part of a separate ruling, as Reid added, “This just tells me they’re gonna take a case to overturn Brown v Board.”
Social media reacts to Joy Reid's comments
As Joy Reid accuses Alito of being a 'Fox host on the court' amid an ethics controversy, viewers find themselves divided, with some pointing fingers at Alito while others direct their criticism towards Reid.
A particular viewer expressed, "Impeach Alito and Thomas."
Following suit, another observer added, "One side or the other will win? Damning stuff."
Additionally, a viewer pointed out, "Alito we have seen your capabilities and expect to see more."
However, a follower contributed, "Get a life," pointing it to Reid.
A comment underscored, "I don't see the problem with the audio. She did the talking, all he said was that "One side or the other is going to win." Which is true. One side or the other HAS to win, it cant be a tie, can it? Y'all's desperation is palpable."
Another comment echoed, "Ridiculous. Sobwhat?? His comment was a big nothing. ...Thats all you have?? Worthless verbage."
An individual elaborated further, saying, "Joy Reid the master of propaganda!!!"
