NEW YORK: Following the civil fraud trial that James' office brought against former president Donald Trump and his Trump Organization in New York, Attorney General Letitia James is openly monitoring the interest that is accruing on the hundreds of millions of dollars that Donald Trump has been ordered to pay.

Earlier this month, Judge Arthur Engoron ordered that Trump pay $355 million in damages after it was discovered that the Republican front-runner for president in 2024 had participated in decades-long dishonest business practices.

The entire penalty, including interest, exceeded $450 million. James posted the current figure on X on Friday, noting that interest of over $100,000 is added to it daily.

She posted, "$464,576,230.62". James calculated the interest that had been added over the previous day on Saturday and again posted, "+$114,553.04". James then wrote on Sunday, "+$114,553.04 = $464,805,336.70."

Notably, Justice Arthur Engoron has ruled that Trump, who has frequently asserted that the case is a politically driven 'witch hunt', would not be allowed to hold an officer or director position in any business in New York for three years.

Additionally, Engoron ordered the two eldest sons of Trump to pay $4 million apiece and imposed a two-year restriction on their ability to do business in New York.

Internet shows mixed reactions to Letitia James' post

On the internet, others criticized the action as being unclassified and speculated that Trump, who has falsely claimed the investigation is a political witch-hunt intended to hurt his 2024 campaign, may use it as leverage in an appeal. However, Others expressed their deep gratitude for James's daily prompts.

A user posted, "This is beneath the office of the Attorney General. Regardless of one's feelings on Trump or on the verdict, this is awful optics, and it shouldn't be tolerated. Shame on you" while one added, "You do realize he can just never pay it right? When he wins on appeal its not going to matter."

Meanwhile, one mentioned, "It will be overturned and you will be disbarred along with Judge crypt keeper. Do continue to provide evidence that you were not impartial" while a user posted, "Does she not realize she's simply adding to the argument to reverse the decision?"

On the other side, a user stated, "HAHAHAHAHA this is too good" while one wrote, "Trolling Level: Expert." Another person stated, "Imma laugh when they read your tweets on appeal" while one added, "I'm bringing my maga hat out into public just for you Tish."
