WASHINGTON, DC: The internet was swift and ruthless in its reaction to the announcement that Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, is publishing a memoir chronicling his long career in public service.

Fauci, who became the face of the COVID-19 pandemic response in the US, is releasing 'On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service' with Viking Books on June 18, as per New York Post.

The memoir promises to provide readers "a personalized document...to understand better the daunting challenges that we have faced in public health over the past 40 years," according to a statement from the 83-year-old.

But many social media users seemed uninterested in Fauci's perspective, responding to the news with snark and derision.

Anthony Fauci came into spotlight with emergence of COVID-19

Fauci had already been working at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for nearly 40 years when COVID-19 thrust him further into the spotlight.

As director of the organization and a key member of the Trump administration's White House Coronavirus Task Force, the unassuming doctor was soon holding regular televised briefings. His plain-spoken, patient style endeared him to millions seeking reliable guidance during a frightening time.

But Fauci would also find himself increasingly at odds with President Trump and others prioritizing economic reopening over health restrictions. As the pandemic wore on, Fauci became vilified by conservative critics.

Republican Senator Rand Paul published an anti-Fauci book accusing him of covering up facts. Fauci also faced earlier criticism from AIDS activists that he initially responded too slowly to the HIV crisis in the 1980s.

Anthony Fauci was awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

For all the partisan attacks, Fauci has earned significant recognition over his long career.

During the George W. Bush administration, he played a key role in developing PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief credited with saving millions of lives globally.

In 2008, President Bush awarded Fauci the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work on the program and 'efforts to advance the understanding and treatment of HIV/AIDS'.

Fauci had eventually succeeded in bringing AIDS activists on board, convincing them of his desire to accelerate treatment discovery.

Internet erupts with strong disapproval to news of Anthony Fauci's memoir

The internet swiftly reacted to the news of Fauci's memoir, expressing strong disapproval. One X user bluntly stated, "That's a no from me......" Meanwhile, another user dismissed the memoir, remarking, "Add it right to the list of books to completely avoid."

A third user imagined the absurdity of purchasing the book, stating, "Imagine purchasing that book." Meanwhile, another individual quipped, "Can't wait to not read it." Among the reactions, one user simply declared, "Hard pass." Another user expressed dissatisfaction with a resounding, "Boooooooo."
