'He gave his life for her': Arkansas officer drowns saving fiancée hours after proposal

LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: What should have been the happiest day of their lives ended in unimaginable heartbreak.

Just hours after getting engaged, 24-year-old Arkansas police officer Fred Marsh lost his life while rescuing his fiancée from a dangerous river current.

The proposal had barely turned into celebration before it became a tragedy that has left his family, fellow officers and community mourning a man many now remember as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Officer dies rescuing fiancée

Authorities said Marsh was canoeing along Missouri’s Elk River with his fiancée, Hailey, and friends on Saturday, July 18, when she was suddenly pulled into the current.

He immediately went in after her.

He was able to guide her back to safety, but in a tragic turn, he was caught in the fast-moving water himself.

Witnesses said he called for help before slipping beneath the surface. His body was recovered by rescue crews the following day.

Hailey’s mother, Sheryl Padgett, while speaking to media outlets, said his actions reflected exactly who he was.

“He saw the love of his life in distress, and he was going to help. He gave his life helping someone else,” she said.

She said Marsh was the kind of person who never hesitated to step in for others. “There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for anyone. You didn’t have to ask him. He would just step in and do whatever it took to help.”

Tragedy unfolds only hours after proposal

The loss feels even more devastating given how the day began.

Padgett said Marsh had proposed to Hailey just hours before the accident, a moment that was meant to mark the start of their future together after nearly three years as a couple.

She described him as a “gentle giant,” saying his Christian faith guided how he treated people and the way he lived his life.

Padgett also spoke about the close bond they shared. After losing her only son in a tragic accident four years earlier, she said Marsh quickly became family to her.

“We instantly formed a bond. I called him my son, and he called me mama,” she said.

Marsh’s cousin, Chris Frye, said becoming a police officer had long been his dream. “As heartbreaking as this is, he died a hero,” Frye said. “He gave his life to save someone else.”

Fred Marsh leaves behind a lasting legacy

Fred Marsh had only recently joined the Rogers Police Department after graduating from the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in April.

Even in that short time, Police Chief Jonathan Best reportedly said he had already distinguished himself.

In a statement, Best described his death as a profound loss, noting that Marsh showed remarkable promise and would be remembered for his energy, kindness, and deep commitment to serving others.

A memorial procession honoring Marsh took place on July 20, traveling from Anderson, Missouri, to Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Meanwhile, Hailey’s sister launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the grieving family, describing Marsh as an extraordinary son, partner, officer, and friend whose loss has left an overwhelming void.
