WASHINGTON, DC: Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota acknowledged that, at a fundraiser retreat on Saturday, May 4, former President Donald Trump compared President Joe Biden's administration to the Nazi Gestapo, but he lowered its significance, according to the New York Post.

Burgum told CNN’s 'State of the Union', "This was a short comment deep into the thing that wasn’t really central to what he was talking about. I think … a majority of Americans feel like the trial that he’s in right now is politically motivated."

Doug Burgum claims Donald Trump’s conviction would be a 'travesty'

Notably, Nazi Germany's notoriously violent Gestapo secret police service systematically targeted Jews and Adolf Hitler's detractors.

Trump said during the closed-door retreat, as per NBC News, "These people are running a Gestapo administration. And it’s the only thing they have. And it’s the only way they’re going to win in their opinion."

James Singer, the spokesman for Biden-Harris 2024, immediately denounced Trump and said, "Trump is once again making despicable and insulting comments about the Holocaust, while in the same breath attacking law enforcement, celebrating political violence, and threatening our democracy."

Burgum, whose name has been mentioned as a potential vice presidential candidate, claimed that if Trump were found guilty in his ongoing Manhattan trial on the alleged document fabrication, it would be a 'travesty of justice' and explained it as a 'business filing error'.

Notably, Alvin Bragg, the District Attorney for Manhattan, has filed a 34-count indictment against Trump. According to the office, Trump fabricated documents to conceal payments made using hush money to stifle critical reports about him during the 2016 race.

Burgum told co-host Jake Tapper on 'State of the Union', "It’s not illegal to pay people for nondisclosure agreements. The outcome of this trial is not going to change a lot of people’s minds. It might actually in some ways help President Trump because it reinforces the idea that the Biden administration is willing to use lawfare to try to attack a political opponent."

Burgum dropped out in late 2023 after a failed campaign for the GOP nomination in 2024. Trump spoke with many prominent Republicans who have generated excitement in the veepstakes on Saturday during the Republican National Committee's spring retreat in Palm Beach. Many saw the event as a test for potential candidates.

Internet trolls Doug Burgum for his statement on Donald Trump

Many internet users trolled Doug Burgum as he acknowledged that Donald Trump compared President Biden's administration to the Nazi Gestapo.

A user posted on social media platform X, "Well he just blew his VP chances!" while one added, "If it was anybody else he would be already tried and in jail."

A person also said, "This dude wants to be VP and is cheerfully drinking the tea TFG is serving," whereas one mentioned, "Listening to a guy ramble and lie, it’s just not impressive."

A user also wrote, "He is acting like a complete clown," while one said, "Not ready for prime time, but how fast can he run from a mob?"
