Hero NYPD detective saves choking baby in viral roadside rescue
BRONX, NEW YORK: An ordinary morning commute turned into a life-saving moment when an NYPD detective pulled over on a busy highway and rescued a choking baby, a dramatic scene now captured in a viral video.
The incident unfolded earlier this week at around 8.45 am, when Detective First Grade Michael Greaney spotted a speeding BMW on the Bronx River Parkway and sensed something was wrong.
Within moments, Greaney’s instincts and training would help save an eight-month-old girl’s life.

Detective Michael Greaney spots panic on the Bronx River Parkway
Greaney, 40, was driving an unmarked vehicle on his way to work at the office of Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny when he noticed a black BMW moving erratically along the parkway, according to the New York Post.
Concerned, Greaney followed the car and activated his lights. When the driver rolled down his window, the fear was immediate and unmistakable.
“My baby’s choking,” the frantic father yelled.
Without hesitation, Greaney pulled over, jumped out of his vehicle, and rushed to the passenger side.
Split-second action caught on viral TikTok video
Footage that has since gone viral on TikTok shows Greaney reaching into the car and carefully lifting the baby girl, who was dressed in a pink onesie. Standing on the side of the road, he held her securely and began patting her back with firm, controlled motions.
Greaney continued the maneuver until the obstruction dislodged.
“I patted her back until something dislodged,” he later told the Post, explaining that while he didn’t see anything come out, he immediately heard something reassuring.
“She let out a little cry, which obviously we know that if you’re talking or crying, you’re not choking,” he said. “So that was a good sign.”
Moments later, a nurse who happened to be passing by stopped to check the baby, confirming that she appeared healthy and breathing normally.
A father’s fear, and another father’s relief
For Greaney, a father of two toddlers himself, the emotions hit close to home.
“[There are] definitely all sorts of emotion, panic, shock, terrified and everything,” he said, acknowledging what the baby’s father must have been feeling in those moments. “So I’m glad that I was able to relieve him of those emotions, and I’m happy that she’s gonna be here for Christmas.”
After making sure the baby was safely back in her car seat, Greaney offered one more piece of advice before heading on his way.
A quiet hero didn’t expect viral attention
Greaney told the father to watch instructional videos on how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on infants so he would feel more prepared in the future.
“I set her back into the car seat, and I took off,” he said.
Later, he was stunned to learn the rescue had gone viral online.
“I told a couple people. I didn’t think it was gonna go like this, no way,” Greaney admitted.
