NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Rep Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) faced plagiarism allegations on Friday, June 21, when parts of his 2019 Ed.D dissertation appeared to be almost identical to the work of other scholars.

The Daily Wire's analysis of the "Squad" member's Manhattanville College dissertation revealed several instances of apparent plagiarism, with certain sections mirroring previous academic papers almost verbatim, among other clear errors.

Jamaal Bowman's dissertation on community schools references Rosalie Rolon-Dow's critical race theory

One example drawn from Jamaal Bowman's 141-page dissertation, "Community Schools: The Perceptions and Practices that Foster Broad-Based Collaboration among Leaders with the Community School Ecosystem," seems to lift the summary of an introductory book on critical race theory written by Rosalie Rolon-Dow, a professor at the University of Delaware. The former principal of a Bronx middle school.

“The CRT movement drew heavily on the critical legal studies movement, radical feminism, and civil rights ideas to develop a framework that squarely challenged the racialized ways in which law affects people of color (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001; Parker, 2003; Rolon-Dow, 2005),” Bowman wrote.

In comparison, the article by Rolon-Dow states, “The movement drew heavily on the critical legal studies movement, radical feminism, and conventional civil rights ideas to develop a framework that more squarely challenged the racialized ways in which laws affect people of color (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001; Parker, 2003).”

Bowman cites Rolon-Dow but fails to use quotation marks in sections of his text that are identical to the academic's work, the New York Post reports.

Jamaal Bowman makes minimal alterations to Rosalie Rolon-Dow's text

In a different part of his dissertation, Bowman makes minimal alterations to Rolon-Dow's text, such as introducing a typo, capitalizing "Critical Race Theory," and replacing "Latino" with "Latinx," but retaining "Latina."

Bowman wrote, “Further, from the perspective of Puerto Rican girls in middle school, Rolon-Dow (2005) explored the intersection between race/ethnicity caring [sic] in the educational experiences of middle school Puerto Rican girls."

He added, "Critical Race Theory and Latinx/Latina critical theory are used as data analysis frameworks because of their emphasis on the roles of race/ethnicity and racism in shaping the circumstances of individuals and institutions.”

Rolon-Dow wrote, “In this article, the author explores the intersection between race/ethnicity and caring in the educational experiences of middle school Puerto Rican girls."

He continued, "Critical race theory and Latino/Latina critical theory are used as data analysis frameworks because of their emphasis on the roles of race/ethnicity and racism in shaping the circumstances of individuals and institutions.”

Jamaal Bowman's paper was plagiarised with two instances of duplicating their exact text

The Daily Wire uncovered at least two additional instances of apparent plagiarism, in which Bowman once again summarized others' research by duplicating their exact text instead of paraphrasing it.

“In further explaining authentic care, Antrop-Gonzalez and De Jesus (2006) stated that a powerful combination of high academic expectations and meaningful student-teacher interpersonal relationships form the basis of authentic caring as an alternative to traditional schooling, which is generally rooted in more aesthetic forms of care,” Bowman wrote.

The 2006 piece by Rene Antrop-Gonzalez and Anthony De Jesus reads, “This powerful combination of high academic expectations and meaningful student-teacher interpersonal relationships form the basis of authentic caring as an alternative to the traditional schooling that many students of color in urban schools experience on a daily basis.”

In another section of his paper, Bowman cites a 2017 study by Tenah K.A. Hunt, Kristen S. Slack, and Lawrence M. Berger, stating: “This study also found that relatedly, risk for exposure to adversity is not evenly distributed across racial and ethnic subgroups."

He further added, "Hispanic and Black children have disproportionally high rates of maltreatment victimization (USDHHS, 2016) and disproportionally grow up in disadvantaged communities. (p. 392).”

The authors from whom he cribbed wrote: “Relatedly, risk for exposure to adversity is not evenly distributed across racial and ethnic subgroups. Hispanic and Black children have disproportionally high rates of maltreatment victimization (USDHHS, 2015) and disproportionally grow up in disadvantaged communities.”

Jamaal Bowman claims 'this isn’t about plagiarism'

The accusations against Bowman follow his earlier defense of the now-disgraced former Harvard University President Claudine Gay.

She resigned in January amidst her plagiarism scandal and faced criticism for her management of antisemitism at the prestigious Ivy League institution.

“This isn’t about plagiarism or antisemitism,” On January 2, the day Claudine Gay resigned, Bowman wrote about the incident on X.

“This is about racism and intimidation. This makes no one safer. The only winners are fascists who bullied a brilliant & historic Black woman into resignation,” he added. “2024 will be a battle for truth, democracy and our shared humanity.”

The 48-year-old Bowman is set to face off against the 70-year-old Westchester County Executive George Latimer in the Democratic primary on June 25 for New York's 16th Congressional District.

A recent Emerson College/WPIX poll shows Bowman trailing Latimer by 17 points, 48% to 31%, with 21% of likely primary voters still undecided.

Internet mocks Jamaal Bowman

As soon as the news went viral on social media, users started reacting to it. A user wrote, "He’s a plagiarist, antisemite an false alarm puller in the middle of a crowded room. He’s just overall not a good person."

Another user added, "Shocker. He cheats on papers and pulls fire alarms. This kid would be expelled from every high school in America."

A third commentator wrote, "He’s an expert in “copy and paste.”

"Jamaal is a shady character," one said.

A person mocked saying, "He probably wrote it with AI and didn't know lol."
