Hugh Hewitt calls reported Iran framework a 'terrible deal,' warns Trump not to give up leverage
WASHINGTON, DC: Conservative commentator and Fox News contributor Hugh Hewitt broke publicly with President Donald Trump’s reported Iran diplomacy push on Wednesday, May 6 sharply criticizing details of a proposed framework that emerged just days after Trump appeared on his radio show.
Hewitt called the outline a “terrible deal,” arguing the United States appeared to be discussing concessions at a moment when, in his view, Tehran had lost strategic ground.
This would be a terrible deal. I hope the terms of any deal would be significantly stricter: No enrichment, ever. HEU to us stat. No more proxies. Turn on the internet. President Trump never gives up leverage. Why would he start now with #Iran on the ropes? https://t.co/5Y46rzNBiw

Hewitt warns against throwing leverage away
Reacting to reports about a possible US-Iran memorandum, Hewitt said the terms being discussed were far weaker than what Washington should be demanding after months of military and economic pressure on Tehran.
Posting on X, he wrote that “this would be a terrible deal,” before laying out what he believed should be non-negotiable conditions: no uranium enrichment under any circumstances, immediate transfer of highly enriched uranium, an end to Iran-backed proxy activity, and greater internal transparency.

Hewitt also questioned why the administration would ease pressure now, arguing Trump has built his political brand around negotiating from strength.
In the post, he suggested the proposal may be a test balloon floated by what he described as an “appeasement caucus,” warning that accepting the framework as described would amount to “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.”

Iran peace framework raises eyebrows
According to reporting from Axios journalist Barak Ravid, the White House is said to be exploring a short memorandum of understanding aimed at halting escalation with Iran and setting up longer nuclear negotiations.
Israeli journalist Amit Segal later outlined key points reportedly under discussion, including the gradual lifting of naval restrictions, phased sanctions relief, the possible release of frozen Iranian assets, and a long-term freeze on uranium enrichment that could stretch beyond a decade.
The reported framework also includes discussions around Iran moving its stockpile of highly enriched uranium out of the country, though final terms remain under negotiation.
No formal agreement has been announced publicly, and US officials have not confirmed whether the framework will move forward.
