NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In a scathing assessment, former White House press aide Sarah Matthews shed light on the potential psychological toll of the glaring absence of family members and supporters rallying behind former president Donald Trump during his high-profile hush money trial.

Matthews, known for her candid insights into the Trump administration, highlighted the significance of the sparse crowds outside the courthouse, a stark contrast from Trump's rallies and events during his presidency, as per HuffPost.

Matthews, in conversation with MSNBC's Chris Jansing, emphasized Trump's fondness for "branding and optics."

"He's someone who's all about branding and optics, and he knows that it's not necessarily the best look that he hasn't had his family by his side [and] that there aren't crowds of protesters outside supporting him," Matthews revealed to Jansing on Thursday, May 2.

"Trump feeds off of that kind of energy, and so for that not to be assembled outside the courthouse is probably disappointing to him, putting him in a bad mood, and so then he's lashing out at aides," Matthews added.

While Eric Trump, Trump's second son, has been the sole family member to attend court proceedings thus far, Matthews predicted an influx of relatives and supporters in the coming weeks.

"They'll continue to try to bring people to be around him so he feels a little bit less embarrassed about the situation," she speculated. However, Matthews expressed doubt that former first lady Melania Trump would join her husband's side during the trial.

"Look, she hasn't even campaigned with him yet. So, I don't think when we're talking about a case where he made a hush money payment to a porn star, or had an affair with her, and then paid her off because he had this affair just days after Melania gave birth to their son. I really wouldn't imagine that she wants to sit through a trial like this," Matthews explained.

In the latest development of Trump's hush money trial, Hope Hicks, former senior White House communications aide, became emotional while testifying on the witness stand on Friday, May 3.

This occurred as an attorney representing Trump initiated cross-examination of her testimony in the criminal trial, according to CNBC.

Internet backs Sarah Matthews' assessment of Donald Trump's situation

The internet was quick to back Matthews' assessment of Trump's situation.

One YouTube user remarked, "His lies are catching up with him, and no one wants to go to jail for him. Obviously, he doesn't get it, it's over."

Another user reflected on the situation, stating, "Typical lifespan of a scammer. The closer the end is, the fewer people that are taken in? Deal with it, Donny, you will attract interest again from your cellmate."

A third user weighed in, observing, "He wants chaos, and smart people are avoiding that after what happened on January 6th." Similarly, another commenter bluntly stated, "No one's defending him because he has no defense. DUH!"

A fifth user likened Trump to a vampire, asserting, "He is like a vampire, he needs the support to drain their energy." This sentiment was echoed by a sixth user who noted, "Yes, even his family and followers are sick of Trump. They have better things to do."

A seventh user pointed out, "He has attacked every class of human citizen and demographic... yet wonders why nobody showed up! lol." Lastly, a user highlighted, "Trump's BS is finally catching up with him. Not everyone is as gullible as he assumes. They are getting wise to his selfish rants and are seeing this character for who he is, a sore loser."
