NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: An ex-aide to Melania Trump ridiculed Donald Trump's birthday wishes to his wife as a "petty performance," suggesting the former first lady is likely to have rolled her eyes at the stunt.

The former president wished Melania a happy birthday while speaking to reporters on Friday, April 26, before entering the Manhattan courtroom for the hush money trial.

Melania, who never accompanied her husband to the ongoing criminal trial, turned 54, and her birthday was likely a "low-key celebration" as she continues to mourn her mother's death and her unhappiness over her husband's hush money trial, as per People.

The GOP presumptive nominee revealed his wife was in Florida and he would be there in the evening after finishing up the "horrible, unconstitutional case".

"I rolled my eyes when he did that," said Stephanie Grisham, a former aide to Melania, as per Raw Story.

"It was, it was so beyond inappropriate, but yet so Donald Trump that on the way into a trial where they are talking about alleged affairs — not one but two — that he had, that he's wishing his wife a happy birthday," the ex-aide said in an interview with CNN's 'Erin Burnett OutFront.'

The Republican White House hopeful is required to be in court every day during the hush money trial to defend himself against the 34 felony charges. He is accused of falsifying business records before the 2016 election to cover up a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to silence her about their affair. Both allegedly had a sexual encounter in 2006, not long after Melania gave birth to Barron Trump.

Grisham, who served as the former first lady's spokeswoman before becoming the White House press secretary, mocked her former boss's birthday wish to Melania as "a performance" to "get voters, to try to get those suburban women and those independents because he knows that she's a very, very popular First Lady and that she, you know, that people really like her."

"It had nothing to do with her and it didn't surprise me at all. I'm sure she rolled her eyes too because it was just so typical selfish Donald Trump," Grisham said. The former aide also asserted Melania was "not sitting home crying over this".

Internet reacts to Melania Trump's supposed reaction

Social media users commented mockingly about Melania's likely reaction to her billionaire husband's birthday wish amid a criminal trial.

One user wrote, "No romantic dinner, yeah right."

Another remarked, "Jeez, I'm sure there's a pre-nup, but for the love of gawd, WHY is she still with the blimp that won't stop gassing America?"

"Maybe in #MAGALand: 'she's a very, very popular First Lady and…people really like her," a third user added.

Meanwhile, a person wrote on Facebook, "How can you tell if she rolls her eyes? You can't see them."

Another commented, "Melanie treated him out a long handle spoon."
