Internet calls for John Cornyn to 'resign' as he backs term limits for next Senate GOP leader amid race to succeed Mitch McConnell

WASHINGTON, DC: John Cornyn, the prospective leader of the Senate Republicans, has stated that term limits for the upper chamber's top brass should be implemented.

In a tweet, he stated one of the reasons why he is running for the race is because he believes the Senate needs more engagement from all of his colleagues. It includes the opportunity for any member to serve in leadership.

Cornyn posted on X, “One reason I am running to be the next Republican Leader is because I believe the Senate needs more engagement from all of my colleagues, and that includes the opportunity for any Member to serve in Leadership. I will support a conference vote to change the rules and institute term limits for the Republican Leader.”

Mitch McConnell, the departing Senate Minority Leader, revealed last week that he intended to resign after the elections on November 5. Cornyn was the first to enter the campaign to replace McConnell.

Having held the position since 2007, when he replaced Tennessee Senator Bill Frist, McConnell is the Senate's longest-serving leader of any party. Following a series of health concerns last year, McConnell froze at public speaking engagements. That, according to his staff, was part of his recovery from a concussion that he suffered after a fall he took last year.

McConnell began his Senate career in 1985, serving as a link between the administrations of Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump. However, he has come under growing criticism from isolationists and nationalists within the Republican Party.

The only opponent Cornyn has faced thus far is Senate Minority Whip John Thune, a Republican who now occupies the No. 2 position in the Senate and announced his candidacy earlier this week.

John Barrasso, the chair of the Senate Republican Conference, was another prospective candidate, but he chose to run for the position of whip instead of confronting the other Johns.

Internet wants Sen. John Cornyn to 'resign'

People on the internet took a jibe at Sen. John Cornyn and even said that he might be 'the worst senator their state has ever had'. A user on X posted, "Resign, you might be the worst senator our state has ever had," while one added, "You would be even worse than McConnell and that’s a low bar."

A user also stated, "No to Cornyn, No to Thune, No to Barraso! We have had enough of establishment sellouts!" whereas one mentioned, "Dade Phelan just lost his primary. Your time is coming, John. You have no idea how much conservatives hate you."

A person also stated, "Resign! You are deep state. You sold out! We don’t want you in the Senate!"
