NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Speaker Mike Johnson announced that he has signed the articles of impeachment for US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas on Monday, April 15, and will be delivering them to the Senate the following day.

According to The Hill, the transfer of the articles will officially force the Senate to take up the matter of Mayorkas' impeachment, which has been pending since it was passed in the House with 214-213 votes in February.

The House Speaker had held back from signing the articles at the request of the conservatives in the Senate, who said that they did not want to rush the process.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, however, is expected to quickly dismiss the charges, as he reportedly stated, "We’re ready to go whenever they are. We are sticking with our plan. We’re going to move this as expeditiously as possible."

Senators are expected to be sworn in as jurors on Wednesday, with Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray presiding over the chamber.

House Homeland Security Chair Mark Green and House Foreign Affairs Chair Michael McCaul are among the impeachment managers, as is Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has long pushed for the cause.

The impeachment resolution that has been passed in the House accuses Mayorkas of “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and “breach of public trust.”

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Johnson shared a picture of him signing the articles on Monday and wrote, "Today, I signed the articles of impeachment for Secretary Mayorkas. Tomorrow, they will be delivered to the Senate."

"The border catastrophe is the number one issue for the American people. We must hold those who engineered it to full account," he continued, before calling on the Senate Majority Leader "Sen Schumer, hold a public trial."



 

Internet slams Mike Johnson for signing the impeachment articles after two months

"Can you do anything that will actually get passed? Quit wasting time. It’s bad enough you waste the House’s time but now the Senate?" wrote a social media user while responding to Johnson's tweet.



 

"You're a time waster. Your work ... ethics is null, and you're a bad person. Pass the aid for Ukraine," stated another.



 

"Anyone know what they're trying to distract us from this week?" jibed a third.



 

"This is nothing but political theater by Speaker Johnson," another person said. "If he was serious about getting the border secured he would’ve refused to fund the Biden regime if they refused to secure the border using the powers they already have. Johnson is a total failure as Speaker," they added.



 

"Talk about useless legislation," one individual wrote.
