NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: On Monday, January 8, 2024, a new gun law was implemented in California backed by Governor Gavin Newsom. The law prohibits firearm owners from carrying weapons in designated "sensitive" public spaces.

These areas include parks, stadiums, government buildings, medical facilities, churches, public transit, various parking areas, locations where liquor is sold and consumed, among others.

The impact of the law extends not only to concealed-carry permit holders but also affects open-carry permit holders, particularly in more rural parts of the state, according to the Los Angeles Times.

As a result, some of California sheriff’s departments have declared their intention not to enforce the state’s enacted gun law.

Following the news, Fox News host Sean Hannity took to X, formerly known as Twitter to report on this issue with his 6.4 million followers.

Many people on the internet took a jab at Newsom as they demand to "defund" him after he implemented the new gun law.

Sean Hannity says California sheriffs ‘won’t back down’ on Gavin Newsom’ gun law

Fox News anchor Sean Hannity took to X and wrote, “WON'T BACK DOWN: California Sheriffs Say They Won't Enforce Newsom-Backed Gun Law. “We have no interest in criminalizing constitutionally protected behavior. We took an oath to uphold our Constitution and will work to protect the rights of our citizens.""

Hannity’s tweet featured an article from his official website that revealed a new-concealed carry law has been implemented in California last week, however, few Golden State sheriffs have refused to enforce the new law backed by Gavin Newsom.

As per The Blaze, the new gun law “prevents firearm owners from carrying weapons in ‘sensitive’ public spaces, which includes parks, stadiums, government buildings, medical facilities, churches, public transit, many parking areas, anywhere liquor is sold and consumed, and several other places. While the law applies to concealed-carry permit holders, it also impacts open-carry permit holders in more rural areas of the state.”

It is also reported that the law is backed by democrats and other supporters of the legislation as they argue that these restrictions are common-sense measures designed to address and mitigate gun violence.

On the other hand, critics contend that the extensive list of designated "sensitive places" essentially restricts permit holders from legally carrying firearms outside their homes.

Newsom signed the bill into law last year, and it was authored by Democratic Senator Anthony Portantino.

Portantino said, “When SB 2 is implemented, it will certainly increase public safety and, I believe, save lives.”

Also in December, US District Judge Cormac J Carney intervened by blocking the implementation of the gun law, preventing it from taking effect on January 1.

In his decision, Judge Carney declared certain portions of the bill unconstitutional, expressing concerns about the broad scope of the law.

He wrote that the law's "coverage is sweeping, repugnant to the Second Amendment, and openly defiant of the Supreme Court."

In a subsequent development, just days after Carney blocked the gun law, a federal appeals court issued a temporary hold on his ruling.

This temporary hold allowed the restrictions to take effect as originally scheduled at the beginning of the year.

Newsom, reacting to Judge Carney's initial decision, characterized it as "dangerous" and expressed approval for the federal appeals court's temporary order.

Newsom expressed, “Californians overwhelmingly support efforts to ensure that places like hospitals, libraries and children's playgrounds remain safe and free from guns.”

But the joint statement from Sutter County Sheriff Brandon Barnes and Sutter County District Attorney Jennifer Dupré, released on Wednesday, declares their decision not to enforce the newly enacted gun law in the county.
