WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump's campaign criticized the reports alleging that the former president referred to Milwaukee as a "horrible city."

The White House hopeful's campaign denounced the comment as "a total lie" after reports suggested he disparaged Milwaukee, a key city in the swing state of Wisconsin and the location of the upcoming Republican National Convention.

Trump reportedly criticized the Democrat-run city during a private meeting with Republican lawmakers in Washington, DC, on Thursday, June 13, marking his first visit to Capitol Hill since the January 6, 2021, insurrection. Winning the key battleground state of Wisconsin is crucial for the real estate mogul's return to the Oval Office.

The Trump campaign blasts the reports as a 'lie'

Trump campaign spokesperson Dylan Johnson dismissed the reports as "a desperate attempt to get likes" on social media. He asserted that no reporters were present in the room where Trump met with congressional Republicans on Capitol Hill.

"It's a total lie," the spokesperson said in a statement that included links to GOP members who backed the ex-president, according to The Hill.

"President Trump was explicitly referring to the problems in Milwaukee, specifically violent crime and voter fraud," the statement read.

Trump's alleged remark of Milwaukee as a "horrible city" was first reported by Punchbowl, sparking outrage from many, including the city's mayor. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson defended the city by pointing out that Trump's presidency was also "horrible" and that the ex-president was "wrong about something yet again," as per The Hill.

President Joe Biden also weighed in on the controversy on X (formerly Twitter), posting a photo of him with Milwaukee Bucks players after their 2021 NBA championship victory. He captioned the photo, "I happen to love Milwaukee."

Biden's campaign responded to the Republican's alleged remark, saying voters of Milwaukee were "fed up with" the former president and the "extreme MAGA Republicans."

However, Wisocon Republicans jumped in to defend Trump. For instance, Rep Derrick Van Orden wrote on X, "Lies busy omission," adding the 45th President was "specifically referring to the crime the CRIME RATE in Milwaukee."

Internet refuses to believe Trump's campaign's explanation

Netizens dismissed the Trump campaign's clarification about the reports of Trump insulting Milwaukee and claimed they were lying.

One user wrote, "Of course they do. The truth is still the truth. Which goes to show, nothing is truly private, so watch what you say." [sic]

Another remarked, "Trump's Campaign as well as Congressional Republicans in Congress are downplaying Trump's remarks about Milwaukee being a Horrible place but we all heard him and we know how he really feels about Milwaukee. Trump's remarks are absolutely disgraceful!"

"No, HE is the liar. He said Milwaukee was a terrible city to have the GOP convention. He really berated them for having it there. Put down the entire city. When he is caught with his foot in his mouth, he just lies again," added a user. [sic]

A response read, "Of course he didn’t say it. He never says anything rude/obnoxious/disgusting/vile." [sic]

Another person said, "Somehow, the Trump campaign doesn’t have a lot of credibility with telling the truth. That is the reason why I do NOT believe them!" [sic]

"That confirms that it was true thanks for the clarification," someone else claimed. Meanwhile, an individual wrote, "It will be on tape and in the transcripts...then you can lie and deflect somehow, somewhere. LOL!"
