Joe Biden says he's 'satisfied' and won't commute any sentence son Hunter gets after gun crime trial conviction

WASHINGTON, DC: On Thursday, June 13, President Joe Biden stated that he will not commute any sentence that his son, Hunter Biden, may receive following his conviction on three counts of felony gun charges.

The president has already stated that he will not pardon Hunter, 54, a stance he reiterated during a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Italy on Thursday.

'I'm extremely proud of my son': President Joe Biden on Hunter Biden

President Biden reiterated Hunter was one of the "most decent men" he had known and who had come out of addiction. 

"I'm extremely proud of my son, Hunter," Biden said. "He has overcome an addiction."

"He's one of the brightest, most decent men I know. And I am satisfied that I'm not gonna do anything. I said I abide by the jury decision. I will do that. And I will not pardon him."

Soon after the news conference concluded, Biden was asked by a reporter if he would commute his son's sentence. "No," Biden responded per CBS News.

This statement came after press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to clear the air about Hunter's commutation on Wednesday.

"He's been very clear. We've been very clear. You know, he loves his son," Jean-Pierre said when asked about the possible commutation of the first son's sentencing. 

"And he and the first lady love their son and they support their son. I just don't have anything, certainly anything beyond that," she continued.

"What I'm saying is he was asked about a pardon. He was asked about the trial specifically, and he answered it very clearly, very forthright," she said.

Biden, in an interview with ABC News last week, which was before the conviction, addressed the trial and said he would accept the outcome and would not pardon his son. 

Internet hails Joe Biden's decision for not commuting Hunter Biden's sentence

The Internet praised President Biden's decision to not commute Hunter's sentence, however, some speculate it was just an election stunt and will last until then.

"Ethics and leadership. No finger pointing or blame like Trump and the GOP," wrote one on X (formerly Twitter).

"This sharply contrasts Biden and Trump. Trump would pardon his kid in a heartbeat, regardless of guilt or innocence, and everyone knows it," one more noted. 

"Let’s wait til after the election. Moreover, we all know the gun charges are just a red herring for the real issues at hand, like collecting money from foreign governments on behalf of his Dad," speculated a user.

"This is how you accept and respect the law... And honestly, I'm sure his son wouldn't want him to do it either," commented one. 

"Well yeah, he believes in norms and the rule of law," praised one more.

"I know it’s hard Mr. President, but you’re doing the right thing. No one is above the law, not even Donald Trump! He also needs to go to jail now!" was another comment.
