PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA: On Friday, the former President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that if re-elected in November, he would reverse the transgender student protections that were implemented last month by the Biden administration.

These protections were enacted in the form of a final set of comprehensive changes to Title IX, the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in schools and education programs that receive government funding.

The Education Department announced these changes in April, and they are scheduled to become effective on August 1st. Importantly, these new regulations will include provisions that cover discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity for the very first time, according to The Hill.

What did Donald Trump say about transgender student protections?

During his appearance on ‘Kayal and Company', a conservative radio talk show in Philadelphia, Donald Trump claimed, “We’re gonna end it on day one.”

“Don’t forget, that was done as an order from the president. That came down as an executive order. And we’re gonna change it — on day one it’s gonna be changed,” the former POTUS asserted.

In a 2021 executive order, President Joe Biden wrote that “all students should be guaranteed an educational environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex, including discrimination in the form of sexual harassment, which encompasses sexual violence, and including discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

“Tell your people not to worry about it,” Trump told hosts Nick Kayal and Dawn Stensland on their show, referring to the newly enacted Title IX rule. “It’ll be signed on day one. It’ll be terminated.”

The former POTUS promised to enforce twelve policies to target the rights of transgender individuals living in the United States. These policies include a nationwide ban on transgender student-athletes participating in sports according to their gender identity, a federal law that acknowledges only two genders, and punishment for healthcare providers who administer gender-affirming medical care to minors.

Even though Title IX is a federal law, its regulations are enforced differently by each administration, which schools must follow to receive federal funding.

Republican governors, attorneys general, and education officials have opposed the law's expanded protections for transgender students, instructing schools in their states to ignore them.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered the state of Arkansas to defy the new regulations and threatened to take legal action against the Biden administration “for any financial loss, including loss of funding.”

More than a dozen Republican-led states have filed lawsuits against the Biden administration's rule, claiming that the rule undermines federal non-discrimination protections for non-transgender students and incorrectly applies the reasoning of a 2020 Supreme Court ruling that protects employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity to Title IX.

These lawsuits, mostly filed in conservative jurisdictions, are expected to succeed in temporarily blocking the new Title IX regulations from being implemented this summer.

The Biden administration has yet to confirm a separate rule governing athletics eligibility.

The Education Department's proposal from last year would prohibit schools from enacting policies that categorically ban transgender student-athletes from sports teams that match their gender identity.
