Internet divided as expert claims Claudia Sheinbaum unlikely to cooperate with US on border security
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO: A leading authority on Latin America has cautioned that the incoming president of Mexico is likely to be "bad news" for the United States and more of the same regarding cooperation on matters like border security.
It was predicted that Claudia Sheinbaum will defeat Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in Mexico's presidential contest and take over as leader of the opposition. Besides, majorities for Sheinbaum's Morena Party were predicted in each of the two chambers of Congress.
President Joe Biden congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum on the historic election win
On Monday, June 3, President Biden said, "I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as the first woman President of Mexico" and that he looks forward "to working closely with President-elect Sheinbaum in the spirit of partnership and friendship that reflects the enduring bonds between our two countries."
"I also congratulate the Mexican people for conducting a nationwide successful democratic electoral process involving races for more than 20,000 positions at the local, state, and federal levels," Biden added, according to Fox News.
A senior political analyst issued a stern warning to the US
A senior policy analyst for Latin America at The Heritage Foundation's Allison Center for National Security, Andres Martinez-Fernandez, cautioned during a press conference that Sheinbaum is a left-wing activist who is unlikely to stray from AMLO's firm stance toward the United States.
"Claudia Sheinbaum is a progressive, and really has a background as an activist/academic, [who] has come up through, the ranks of the Mexican left, and, comes from an established family in the Mexican left," he said.
The US and Mexico have not been on the same page regarding illegal immigration
Mexico and the United States have not always agreed especially when it comes to the issue of illegal immigrants crossing the border into the US.
Although the Biden administration has highlighted several areas of collaboration with Mexico, AMLO has threatened to launch an "information campaign" against Republican lawmakers. He has also falsely claimed that fentanyl is not produced in Mexico.
"We can expect a lot of the same as far as US-Mexico relations and US policies, on issues that are of top concern to the United States and have direct impact on the United States," Martinez-Fernandez said.
"And in general, that's bad news because we have seen the Lopez Obrador administration, whether it's on security, whether it's on trade, on migration, and other issues, narco-corruption, a very poor partner in the Lopez Obrador administration for the United States, where we see a deterioration of cooperation across the board," he further said, adding "And the occasional cooperation that we do see, for example on migration where we've seen increased actions, it's very political and it's very transient and transactional."
Claudia Sheinbaum is likely to provide continuity from the Lopez Obrador administration
Martinez-Fernandez said that because of the current president's continued presence, Sheinbaum would probably "stay the course" and offer continuity from the Lopez Obrador administration.

"Even if there is a willingness or a desire on her part to see a change and that some in the US are kind of hopeful about that. I really think that there's not going to be much room for her to be able to implement that again because, AMLO is always going to be basically looming large over the Sheinbaum administration, playing a very active role, I expect behind the scenes to make sure that there's continuity," he said.
Claudia Sheinbaum is more likely to listen to the left-wing in Mexico
He also warned that she is likely to listen more to the left-wing in Mexico. "She's going to be much more responsive to the voices on the Mexican left who are less willing to see aggressive actions against migrants and more open to, to support and, and, and, willing to, to see those, movements continue," he said.

The statements were made ahead of President Biden's anticipated announcement of executive measures to combat illegal immigration at the border on Tuesday, June 4. But, in order to do so, he might require Mexico's assistance, depending on what those actions entail.
Internet says 'this woman is a victory for all the cartels'
Netizens gave a mixed response as Claudia Sheinbaum is set to become next president of Mexico. One X user wrote, "This woman is a victory for all the cartels." Another asked, "Since when did a Communist Climate Extremist 'elected' to lead a drug cartel-infested country on our border become 'maybe bad news'????

"She is a Socialist who likes and follows “The Green Book” ideology from Gaddafi. She doesn't like the Zionists! She is pro-Palestinian," opined one. "Oh shit here we go, the United States needs to build a damn upstream and then flood it!" wrote another. One commented, "Anything left wing is bad news."
