Rudy Giuliani mocked as he's 'officially disbarred' in NY for repeatedly lying about 2020 election
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has been officially disbarred “effective immediately” due to his attempts to subvert the 2020 presidential election.
The decision was made by a state appeals court on Tuesday, July 2, according to AP.
Rudy Giuliani allegedly 'flagrantly misused' his attorney position
The panel of judges in New York’s Appellate Division, First Department wrote that Giuliani “flagrantly misused” his position as an attorney for Donald Trump and his election campaign in 2020.
They found that he made “intentionally” false statements to courts, lawmakers, and the public.
“In so doing, respondent not only deliberately violated some of the most fundamental tenets of the legal profession, but he also actively contributed to the national strife that has followed the 2020 Presidential election, for which he is entirely unrepentant,” wrote the judges.
The court's written statement emphasized that Giuliani made "demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers, and the public at large in his capacity as lawyer for former President Donald J Trump and the Trump campaign in connection with Trump's failed effort at reelection in 2020."
The ruling marks a significant legal and professional rebuke for Giuliani who had already had his law license in New York suspended for his false statements following the 2020 election
Rudy Giuliani's role in promoting election fraud claims
Giuliani played a key role in promoting Trump's unfounded claims of election fraud in 2020. The now-disbarred attorney held a press conference at Four Seasons Total Landscaping outside Philadelphia on the day the election was called for Joe Biden over Trump.
At the time, Giuliani vowed to challenge what he alleged was a vast conspiracy by Democrats.
The election fraud claims and the false narratives that Giuliani helped propagate contributed to the violent attack at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to stop the certification of Biden's win in the 2020 election.
