TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA: Severe geomagnetic storms have hit the Earth triggering beautiful Aurora displays across many countries, including the southern US.

Social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) was buzzing with users sharing pictures of the spectacle that has plastered across skies in many places at the same time, making it an unnatural phenomenon.

Geomagnetic storms create dazzling display of  Northern Lights across US

According to NOAA, "extreme" geomagnetic conditions have produced spectacular auroras. The phenomemon has reportedly reached levels not recorded since 2003. Vibrant northern lights were visible even in places like Florida and Southern Carolina.

Experts are baffled over the rare event, which could continue affecting the planet throughout the weekend. The sun's emissions have been stirring up the magnetic field, causing disruptions that could impact everything from satellite operations to our power grids, as per Fox Weather News.

SWPC says that the satellites monitoring the situation observed a level 5 geomagnetic activity, indicating the intensity of the storm. These geomagnetic storms have the potential to wreak havoc on infrastructure, affecting communication systems, navigation, and more.

Shawn Dahl, a coordinator at the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) said, "We have notified all of our infrastructure operators that we coordinate with, such as satellite operators, communication folks, and of course, the power grid here in North America. So they are able and prepared to take mitigation efforts as much as possible throughout this event if it should unfold to the levels that we currently are anticipating."

NOAA space weather forecasters have been keeping a close eye on the sun, noting at least seven coronal mass ejections (CMEs) heading toward the planet. These solar conditions are expected to persist into the weekend, creating an extraordinary event that many are calling historic, the New York Times reports.

The SPWC conveyed on Friday, "This is an unusual and potentially historic event."

According to the reports, people have been witnessing the Auroras spectacle in parts of Europe as well.
