WASHINGTON, DC: At a court conference on Friday, May 10, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said that he and his wife had experienced "nastiness" and "lies" over the last several years and criticized Washington, DC as a "hideous place", according to NBC News.

Notably, judges, lawyers, and other court staff from the 11th Circuit Judicial Conference—which hears federal cases from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia—attended the conference where Thomas spoke. In reply to a query concerning working in a society that appears to be cruel, he made the remarks in retaliation against his critics.

Thomas said, "I think there’s challenges to that. We’re in a world and we — certainly my wife and I the last two or three years it’s been — just the nastiness and the lies, it’s just incredible."

He added, "But you have some choices. You don’t get to prevent people from doing horrible things or saying horrible things. But one you have to understand and accept the fact that they can’t change you unless you permit that."

Notably, Thomas has come under fire for allegedly accepting opulent trips from a Republican donor without disclosing them. Last year, Thomas insisted that he was exempt from reporting the vacations that were funded by one of "our dearest friends".

Moreover, his spouse, conservative activist Ginni Thomas, also faced the heat for spreading unverified allegations of corruption by President Joe Biden on her Facebook page.

He didn't address the specific content of the critiques directly, but did warn that "reckless" Washington people would "bomb your reputation".

Thomas mentioned, "They don’t bomb you necessarily, but they bomb your reputation or your good name or your honor. And that’s not a crime. But they can do as much harm that way."

Notably, US District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, a former legal clerk of Thomas' who was subsequently elevated to the federal court, questioned Thomas during the hearing.

The court's longest-serving justice spoke for an hour about a variety of subjects, including his grandfather's teachings, his friendships with former co-workers, and his opinion that court documents and debates ought to be more easily understood by "regular people".

Moreover, Thomas talked about how much he disliked Washington, DC, having spent most of his working life there. "I think what you are going to find and especially in Washington, people pride themselves on being awful. It is a hideous place as far as I’m concerned," he said.
