ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Fani Willis has positioned her reelection campaign as a defense of the "rule of law" amid escalating criticism for her role as the lead prosecutor in Donald Trump's Georgia election interference case.

During an interview with MSNBC on Monday, May 20, the Fulton County District Attorney said, “I am at a point where I need Fulton County voters to get out and vote."

“I need people around the country to support me big and small to say that we are going to be a country that still believes in the rule of law," she added.

Fani Willis previously indicted Donald Trump for attempting to overturn 2020 Georgia election results

In the Democratic primary on Tuesday, May 21, Willis, who is contending this year, faces a primary challenge from attorney Christian Wise Smith.

If victorious, the DA is expected to face Courtney Kramer, who is running unopposed in the GOP primary in the November election.

Willis gained national prominence for her probe and indictment of former president Trump and 14 co-defendants on felony state charges related to conspiring to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia and also for the participation in a “criminal enterprise.”

In the election interference case, Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The trial is currently on hold as a state appeals court reviews Trump's petition to disqualify the Fulton County DA for alleged improper conduct, according to USA Today.

Willis, who donned a “V-O-T-E” necklace, criticized Kramer as "unqualified," and claimed that the Republican opponent has “never practiced criminal law.”

Kramer who practices election law is an Atlanta-based attorney. After the 2020 presidential election, she served as a litigation consultant for Trump's legal team.

Fani Willis' legal challenge from Donald Trump's team

Beyond the electoral challenges, Willis is also battling against Trump's legal team who are seeking to disqualify her from the election interference case, citing her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she assigned to oversee the case.

In March, the prosecutor stepped down from the case after Judge Scott McAfee ruled that either Willis or Wade had to recuse themselves.

Internet divided over Fani Willis' plea to voters

Reacting to Willis asking voters to reelect her in the Georgia primary election, one user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "Yeah, let's give her more taxpayer money to enrich herself!"

One user wrote, "I hope Fani Willis loses in a landslide," while another comment read, "The only reason yall support her is because she’s going after Trump, just admit it."

"Get out there Fulton County. Help reelect Fani Willis. We need her," a netizen remarked while a user tweeted, "I don't think this is going to go well for her," and another user wrote, "She needs to be disbarred."
