Internet weighs in as House GOP asks DOJ to probe Trump 'fixer' Michael Cohen's alleged lies to Congress
WASHINGTON, DC: House Republicans urged the Department of Justice to investigate Donald Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, for allegedly lying to Congress multiple times, the New York Post reported.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer referred Cohen to the DOJ on Wednesday, May 8, for ostensibly lying to Congress at least six times in 2019.
Republican lawmakers in February 2019 had made another criminal reference of the ex-Trump "fixer" to the DOJ under similar accusations. However, the request was declined.
In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Jordan and Comer wrote, "We again request that the Justice Department investigate whether any of Mr Cohen's testimony warrants another charge."
Cohen is a potential key witness in the ongoing hush money trial against Trump. The former attorney apparently made a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election on behalf of the ex-president to hide their alleged affair.
What are the alleged lies told by Michael Cohen?
The House GOP claimed Cohen lied six times under oath. It includes his assertion that he did not attempt to get employed by Trump's White House, denying involvement in the creation of the social media account "WomenForCohen," and declining any association with a foreign government he was obliged to report.
He also allegedly lied to Congress when he denied committing election fraud and claimed "blind loyalty" to Trump. He later pleaded guilty to the first false testimony and was convicted.
Cohen was sentenced to three years imprisonment in 2018 for campaign finance violations to help Trump pay the hush money to Daniels and model Karen McDougal.
Comer and Jordan disputed Cohen's claims, citing prosecutors had evidence that he was "expected to be given a prominent role and title in the new administration" of his client. And the owner of the WomenForCohen contradicted the former Trump attorney's testimony.
Two contracts from 2017 involving entities with partial foreign government ownership and actions indicated he had no "blind loyalty" to Trump.
"Currently, Manhattan's popularly elected District Attorney Alvin Bragg is using Cohen as his star witness in an ongoing criminal prosecution of President Donald Trump," wrote House GOP in the letter to Garland, adding, "Bragg's case heavily relies on Cohen's testimony and credibility."
Besides the alleged lies regarding the hush money payments, Comer and Jordan brought up another testimony where Cohen apparently lied to the House Intelligence Committee.
In 2019, he testified to the panel that he did not remember Trump asking him to inflate the process of the ex-president's real estate assets to secure favorable bank loans.
However, in 2023, during Trump's New York civil fraud trial, the attorney said his client tasked ask him to "increase the total assets based upon a number that he arbitrarily elected … and my responsibility, along with [then-Trump Organization CFO] Allen Weisselberg, primarily, was to reverse-engineer."
Cohen testified that he lied under oath about his statement in the civil fraud case when Trump's lawyer, Alina Habba, later cross-examined him.
"Congress cannot perform its oversight function if witnesses who appear before its committees do not provide truthful testimony," further wrote Jordan and Comer, attaching transcripts and other materials to support their request for an investigation.
Internet reacts to House Republicans urging the DOJ to investigate Michael Cohen for allegedly lying to Congress
One wrote, "Ah, politics. It's like a never-ending reality show where the drama's scripted and the plot twists are predictable," and another echoed, "Politics is just a never-ending drama show, isn't it? Gotta wonder if they're more about the investigation or the headlines."
"GOP waste more tax dollars and time," opined a person, while someone else added, "His lies were all in service to and for the protection of your boy, Trump."
"Jim Jordan is going to end up getting sued or worse," declared an individual. An enraged person said, "And that probe will start in 3...2...1... Never."
One more asked, "Why him? How many people do we see that lie to Congress every day and nothing happens?" "Comer and Jordan accusing anyone of lying is epic hypocrisy," remarked another person.
