Jake Tapper hits back at Trump’s ‘fake news’ allegation against CNN over Iran ‘victory’ report
WASHINGTON, DC: After President Donald Trump accused CNN of covering "fake news" for reporting on Iran's statement about celebrating the nation's "victory," CNN anchor Jake Tapper defended his network.
Trump called out CNN for showing false or misleading information, but Tapper argued that the network's reporting was based on verified sources and put in the right context.
Tapper says CNN reported verified Iranian statements
During his show, Tapper said CNN accurately reported statements issued by Iranian officials, pushing back on allegations that the network had relied on false or unverified sources.

“The issue boils down to this. The statement from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, which claimed victory for Iran, did not fit the messaging that the Trump administration wanted to project,” Tapper said during Wednesday’s broadcast.
“And instead of calling out the Iranian regime for its conflicting statements or explaining how Iran does this all the time, President Trump attacked CNN by falsely claiming we made it up. By lying to you.”
He emphasized that reporting on such statements is part of standard journalistic practice.
He continued, “We didn’t make it up, nor did we present any of Iran’s narratives as fact. We simply presented what the statement said, in the context of the rest of the war. And that is our job as journalists to report on what is happening in a war.”
Tapper rejected Trump’s claims that the network had sourced the information from a “fake news site,” stating that the information was obtained through legitimate channels and corroborated by Iranian state media.
He said CNN’s role is to report developments as they occur, regardless of political reaction.
Before concluding his defense, Tapper stated point-blank that “our job is not to try and please the president or only report the statements he likes.”
“We’re going to tell you what’s going on and we’re going to keep doing that,” Tapper stated, adding, “No matter how many lies this administration or the Iranians tell.”
Trump accused CNN of covering a 'fraud' statement
The heated exchange reflects broader tensions between Trump and major news organizations, including CNN, which he has frequently criticized. Over the years, Trump has repeatedly accused media outlets of bias and inaccurate reporting.
The statement made by Tapper came only a day after Trump lashed out at CNN on Truth Social, just a few hours after announcing that the US would observe a two-week ceasefire with Iran.

More precisely, Trump criticized CNN for releasing a “false statement” issued by Iran, according to which America suffered a historic defeat.
“The alleged statement put out by CNN World News is a FRAUD, as CNN well knows,” Trump railed in his social media post.
CNN clarified that its reporting aims to present information from official sources and provide context for viewers. Tapper reiterated that journalists have a responsibility to report verified information, even when it becomes a point of political dispute.
