AUSTIN, TEXAS: Texas Rep Jasmine Crockett expressed skepticism regarding Melania Trump's recent support for abortion rights, especially due to her husband former President Donald Trump's vocal stance against Roe v Wade.

During a recent MSNBC appearance, the 43-year-old said, "That’s actually been, really kind of a ‘scratch your head’ moment that we all are examining right now. Trying to figure out, are you trying to play good cop, bad cop and bring people in to trust Donald Trump?"

Jasmine Crockett's reaction was in response to a question about whether the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign would welcome support for abortion access from across the political spectrum.

The congresswoman suggested that the Donald Trump camp might exploit Melania's position to mislead the public into believing the former president advocates for women’s rights.

She elaborated, "Obviously when we think about a spouse, we think pillow talk. It’s like, well maybe he’s going to be good on this issue." She emphasized that Trump is fundamentally responsible for the current state of abortion rights, stating, "This is Donald Trump’s Supreme Court that literally stripped us of our rights."

Crockett highlighted the irony of expecting Trump to reverse the damage he has caused, noting, "He is the one that set us ablaze and set us on fire; I don’t then anticipate that he is going to be the fireman to actually put this fire out."

She further underscored that Trump's actions have consistently contradicted his claims about supporting women’s rights, adding, "What we know is that Donald Trump has bragged about the overturning of Roe [v Wade]."

Melania recently uploaded a short video stating that she has always supported abortion rights, adding that there is no room for compromise when it comes to the "individual freedom" of women.

She posed a rhetorical question to underscore the importance of bodily autonomy: "What does my body, my choice really mean?"

Moreover, in her forthcoming memoir, the former first lady writes, "It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government," as per The Guardian

She continues, "Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes."

"Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life," notes Melania.

Jasmine Crockett urges voter engagement in Texas Senate race

Turning to the political landscape in Texas, Jasmine Crockett highlighted the competitive Senate race involving Democratic candidate Colin Allred against Republican incumbent Ted Cruz.

She remarked that she thinks there’s a chance for a Democratic victory, emphasizing the importance of voter turnout. "If we get to the polls, then it’s game over for Ted Cruz," noted Crockett.

Encouraging constituents to engage, the lawmaker recalled the optimism many felt during the 2008 election, saying, "Even if you don’t believe, let’s go ahead and hope that Allred can take out Cruz and make sure that we show up to the polls and vote up and down the entire ballot."
