WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) made a bombshell statement on Saturday, April 19, claiming that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man deported by the Trump administration, is "a lot less criminal" than President Donald Trump.

Garcia is currently being detained at a lower security facility in Santa Ana, El Salvador, as per Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen. Federal officials accepted that he was deported to El Salvador because of an "administrative error," per Mediaite.

Jasmine Crockett made the comments during an interview on MSNBC's 'The Katie Phang Show', where she was asked about efforts by Sen Chris Van Hollen to assist Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported to El Salvador in March.

Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador last week to meet Garcia. The Maryland resident, who admitted to illegally entering the US in 2012, was held in El Salvador's mega-prison Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) after deportation.

Crockett praised Van Hollen’s initiative and expressed concern about Garcia's ongoing detention when host Katie Phang asked her if more elected officials should follow the senator's footsteps.

The Texas congresswoman said, "Yeah. No, absolutely. So first of all, kudos to Senator Van Hollen. And honestly, that’s what it looks like to be an elected representative. He represents Maryland."

However, she then compared Garcia to the POTUS in terms of conviction.

"This is someone who is a Maryland resident. And he decided that he was going to go down there and check on him. And honestly, I don’t know that I was convinced that he was alive. I really don’t. And so I was happy to see that he was alive, number one," Crockett added.

She further mentioned, "But number two, if Senator Van Hollen can get down there, if the president can get up here and get to the White House, then I don’t understand why we can’t get Abrego up out of there."

Crockett explained, "I mean, we know that they admitted that they were wrong. Now they’re trying to double back and say, well, he’s this terrible person and all this kind of stuff."

She further stated, "But here’s the reality. As far as I’m concerned, he’s a lot less criminal than the person that’s sitting in the White House, because last time I checked, he doesn’t have any criminal convictions."

Garcia was accused by Trump administration officials of being affiliated with the MS-13 gang, committing domestic violence, and suspected of human trafficking, per the outlet.

However, he has no criminal convictions in the US.

Meanwhile, Trump was convicted in New York in 2024 on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records. He also faced other legal battles before he was elected last year, per Mediaite.
