Jay Leno recalls being asked about dating amid wife Mavis’ dementia: 'You gonna get a girlfriend now?'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jay Leno has been in the spotlight for decades as a comedian and late-night host, but recently he found himself facing a very different kind of attention—questions about his personal life while caring for his wife, Mavis, who is battling advanced dementia.
The former 'Tonight Show' host opened up about a shocking encounter that left him stunned, illustrating how public perceptions of loyalty and marriage can surprise even someone as seasoned as Leno.
Jay Leno recalls shocking question about dating amid wife Mavis’ dementia
Speaking on the ‘Life Above the Noise with Maria’ podcast, Leno described what he called “the most Hollywood thing” he’d ever experienced. A man actually asked him, “So, are you gonna get a girlfriend now?” Leno’s response was immediate: “Well no, I have a girlfriend. I’m married. Married 45 years.”
Despite his answer, the man pressed on, saying, “Yeah, but you know what I mean.”
Jay Leno says staying loyal to wife surprises people today
Jay Leno explained he has no interest in dating anyone else because he and Mavis are “kinda in this together here.” He noted how strange it feels that people make such a fuss over staying by a spouse’s side. “You’re just doing the right thing because you’re supposed to,” he said. He added that living up to marriage vows seems increasingly rare today, joking about how absurd it would be to tell Mavis, “Honey, I’ll be with my girlfriend. I’ll be back later.”
Jay Leno shares how humor helps care for wife during dementia battle
Despite the challenges, Jay focuses on keeping moments of happiness alive. He shared a story of a night when Mavis told him she loved him at 2 am, and he jokingly replied, “You’re having a nightmare, go back to bed.” The comment made her laugh uncontrollably, and he called that moment “fun” and rewarding. He also acknowledged the heartbreaking side of dementia, such as when Mavis repeatedly mourned her mother’s passing as if for the first time, day after day, for three years.
According to court documents obtained by E! News, Leno filed for a conservatorship of Mavis’ assets in January 2024, which was officially approved later that April. The couple, married since 1980, have navigated the legal and emotional complexities together, staying committed even amid public scrutiny.
