Speaking with People, the former 'Tonight Show' host reflected on how caring for his wife has given him perspective. “I’ve been very lucky in my life. My wife is fighting dementia, but it’s not cancer. It’s not a tumor. So, I enjoy taking care of her,” he said.
Mavis, 79, was diagnosed with dementia in January 2024, leading Leno to file for conservatorship to oversee her medical and financial needs. Despite the emotional toll, he said he doesn’t view caregiving as a burden but as an opportunity to spend more time with the woman he’s loved for decades.
“I’ve been very lucky in my life,” Leno continued. “My wife is fighting dementia and all that, but it’s not cancer. It’s not a tumor, so I enjoy taking care of her.”
He also acknowledged the difficult years ahead but emphasized his positive outlook. “There are going to be a couple of years that are tricky. So, the first 46 years were really great. But it’s okay. It’s not terrible. I’m not a woe-is-me person. I’m just lucky that I am able to take care of her.”
Leno said he feels grateful that his career success allows him to provide Mavis with the care she deserves. “I’m very lucky,” he added. “I enjoy her company. As soon as this ride’s over, I’m going home, and I’ll make her lunch.”
