WASHINGTON, DC: Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said recently that officials in the Trump administration who broke the law should be charged with a crime.

Pritzker made the comments while discussing what has been called a broader Democratic plan to address issues that occurred during the Trump administration.

JB Pritzker calls for accountability

During an interview with New York Times reporter Lulu Garcia-Navarro, Pritzker was asked, “What does a project 2029 agenda look like for you?” and responded:

“I don’t think you can speak of it in shorthand, but I’ll just say a couple of things that I think are absolutely necessary.”

“One is we’ve got to restore the rule of law, and that means holding people accountable who’ve broken the law,” he said.

Pritzker said that Trump administration officials and law enforcement agents who “broke the law” should be held accountable through criminal or civil prosecution.

The governor framed the idea as part of efforts to “restore the rule of law” in future administrations. “Talking about this administration, when we get a new one, the people in this administration who’ve broken the law and federal agents who’ve broken the law need to be held accountable.”

Besides Chicago, the president on Friday said he planned to target Baltimore and New York as well for his next federal crackdown on crime following days of federal agents working the streets of Washington with DC Metro Police. Garcia-Navarro followed up by asking, “And that means criminally prosecuted?”

Pritzker continued: “Criminally prosecuted, civilly prosecuted, whatever it is that we can do. It may be that you can’t criminally prosecute somebody, but that you can go after them civilly.”

Proposal tied to broader Democratic strategy

The governor’s remarks suggest that Democrats could pursue both criminal and civil avenues against officials if wrongdoing is established.

Pritzker, the incumbent Democratic governor of Illinois, is running for reelection and would serve a third term if elected after winning his primary without opposition on Tuesday.

Rep Mary Miller (R-IL) posted on X in response to the interview.

“Pay attention: JB Pritzker and the Democrats are openly laying the groundwork for political retribution against their opponents.”

Former Breitbart News Senior Editor-at-Large Joel B Pollak also reacted on X, writing: “This threat is a call for civil war.”

Pritzker's mention of a "Project 2029 agenda" comes at a time when Republicans were developing their own transition plan for the 2024 presidential election, Project 2025, which was led by conservatives to prepare for a possible Trump administration.

Paul Dans, the director of the Heritage Foundation, said that the initiative was the target of the "greatest misinformation campaign since the Russia hoax."

Officially known as the “Presidential Transition Project,” it is a 922-page policy framework intended to “shape the agenda” of a future administration, provide personnel, and guide the transition alongside a potentially Republican-controlled Congress.

As discussions continue, Pritzker’s remarks are likely to remain part of the wider political conversation about accountability, governance, and the direction of future administrations.
