JD Vance reveals Lindsey Graham quote he'll 'never forget' after senator's sudden death
WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President JD Vance honored the late Sen Lindsey Graham with a deeply personal tribute on Sunday, July 12, revealing a behind-the-scenes story that he said perfectly captured the South Carolina Republican's character.
Rather than focusing on Graham's decades-long political career, Vance recalled how one of their biggest public disagreements unexpectedly became the foundation of a lasting friendship.
Lindsey Graham came from humble beginnings and became one of the most powerful lawmakers in the most powerful nation on Earth. His story was a fundamentally American one.

Early in my Senate tenure, I remember getting into a shouting match with Lindsey about a Ukraine funding…
The two Republicans frequently found themselves on opposite sides of foreign policy debates, particularly over continued US funding for Ukraine.
Yet Vance said Graham never allowed political differences to overshadow personal relationships, a quality he now says he will "never forget."
A fight that changed everything
In a post on X, Vance recalled getting into what he described as "a shouting match" with Graham during lunch over a Ukraine funding bill early in his Senate tenure.
The disagreement appeared to expose a growing divide within the Republican Party over America's role in the war.
But the next day, Vance said he learned that Graham had quietly been advocating for legislation that Vance cared about behind the scenes.
"That was Lindsey Graham," Vance wrote. "He fought like hell for the things he believed in, and he was just as willing to go to bat for you when it counted."
For Vance, the episode demonstrated Graham's ability to separate political combat from personal loyalty.
Politics never became personal
Vance also remembered Graham's unique personality inside the Senate, describing him as someone who genuinely loved politics and constantly searched for ways to help fellow Republicans.
According to Vance, Graham often joked, "I don't care if you're an isolationist or a religious fanatic, so long as you have an R next to your name, I want you to win."
The vice president said Graham possessed "the best sense of humor in the Senate" and remained intensely engaged in Republican politics, even when ideological disagreements emerged within the party.
Respect despite disagreements
While acknowledging they often clashed on policy, Vance said those differences never prevented him from developing genuine admiration for Graham.
"We certainly had our disagreements," he wrote. "But I couldn't help but like him."
Vance described Graham as "a one-of-a-kind figure in our politics" and concluded his tribute by offering prayers for the senator's family.
The message adds to a growing wave of bipartisan tributes recognizing Graham's decades in public service.
