PHOENIX, ARIZONA: Vice President JD Vance has revealed just how deeply the death of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk affected him, admitting that he spent multiple sleepless nights searching for answers because he felt he owed it to his friend.

Speaking about the aftermath of Kirk’s death, Vance said the loss consumed him to the point that he began researching every possible theory he could find in an effort to understand what had happened.

He recalled that his wife, Usha Vance, became concerned as he stayed awake night after night trying to make sense of the tragedy.

Vance said his search for answers became an obsession in the days following Kirk’s death.

“It's the only time I can remember my wife ever telling me that she was really worried about me,” he said.

According to Vance, he spent several nights diving into theories and searching for explanations, refusing to step away even when his family urged him to rest.

“I stayed up all night for many nights in a row researching every conspiracy theory, going down every rabbit hole,” he said.

The vice president explained that he felt a personal responsibility to keep digging because of what Kirk meant to him.

“When my lovely wife, Usha, told me to come to bed, I told her I owed it to Charlie to try to uncover every stone, and so that's what I tried to do.”

Eventually, Vance said he realized that constantly searching for answers was not helping him process the loss.

“What saved me was not lying to myself, but accepting the reality of the fight that we're in. Charlie's death was an immense loss and irreplaceable loss,” he said.

He added, “We got kicked in the teeth, my friends, and there's no sugarcoating it or pretending that it didn't happen. We need to accept that.”

JD Vance remembered Charlie Kirk’s friendship and guidance

The emotional comments are consistent with the way Vance has spoken about Kirk since his death.

At AmericaFest 2025, Vance reflected on the friendship they built over the years and the void left behind after Kirk’s passing.

Addressing attendees, he said he missed not only Kirk’s energy but also the conversations they shared behind the scenes.

I miss his optimism. I miss his energy. I miss the phone calls where we'd strategize,” Vance said.

More than anything, however, he said he missed Kirk’s perspective.

“But most of all, I miss Charlie's wisdom. I miss his reminder that politics is not a dress rehearsal or a game.”

Vance urged supporters to continue fighting for the causes Kirk championed, telling the crowd that honoring his legacy meant carrying forward the work he devoted his life to.

JD Vance paid tribute to Charlie Kirk after his death

In a lengthy tribute shared after Kirk’s death, Vance recalled how their friendship began with a simple act of kindness in 2017.

After one of his early television appearances, Vance received a message from someone he barely knew at the time.

“He told me I did a great job. It was Charlie Kirk, and that moment of kindness began a friendship that lasted until today,” Vance wrote.

The vice president praised Kirk as someone who was endlessly curious and eager to learn. He described him as a person who welcomed people rather than criticizing them when they changed their minds.

With Charlie, the attitude was never ‘I told you so,’ but always, ‘Welcome,’” Vance wrote.

He also credited Kirk with standing by him during some of the most important moments of his political career.

According to Vance, Kirk frequently checked in on his family, offered prayers and guidance, and helped organize major events during the campaign.

Looking back, Vance said the loss remains difficult to accept. But he has found comfort in focusing on the values Kirk championed and the impact he had on countless people.

“And what saved me was realizing that the story of the Christian faith, like the story of these United States of America, is one of immense loss followed by even bigger victory,” Vance said.
