Jeremy Medina: Baseball player who met with freak accident dies days after doctors declare him brain dead
GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA: In a heartbreaking turn of events, Jeremy Medina, a promising high school baseball player has died days after he was declared brain dead following an accidental hit in the head with a bat during practice.
According to his family's announcement on Monday, December 11, the 18-year-old's "heart stopped about an hour" before the arrival of his grandmother for an honor walk scheduled for his organ donation, reports Daily Mail.

On Tuesday, December 12, Medina's family stated, "We know Jeremy was and will always be in God’s hands and we will see him soon."
"We are grateful for all the prayers and support over the last three weeks, and we appreciate everyone’s understanding as we take time now to be with our family," they added.
Before the tragic incident, the Gainesville High School standout had a scholarship offer to play college ball, according to his family. In 2022, Medina played both pitcher and catcher on his school's baseball team.
His father David stated that the teenager was a devout Christian with aspirations of becoming a youth minister and also pursuing his baseball dreams.
"Our strength, my family’s strength, my strength since day one has been rooted in the most amazing power of Jesus Christ," David said.
Sharing Medina's wish to become an organ donor, his uncle Efrahim 'Frank' Medina said, "Before his passing, Jeremy made the decision to give the gift of life by registering as an organ and tissue donor when he received his driver's license."
"Not only will lives be saved and improved, the family members, friends, and communities of those who receive his organs and tissues will be forever impacted by the memories made possible thanks to a second chance at life," he added.
Was there any foulplay in Jeremy Medina's accident?
On November 20, Medina was hospitalized in a coma after he was struck in the head and had been on life support at Gainesville's Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Following the incident, Gainesville High Principal Jamie Green stated that Medina leaned into a batting cage net while a teammate was hitting the balls.
"As a player followed through on his swing, Jeremy leaned into the net and was struck in the head. There is no horseplay, no misconduct, and no intent," said Green.
A week before Medina's death on Sunday, December 10, a doctor described his medical condition as "neurologically dead."
Speaking to WSB-TV, Dr.Michael Cormican talked about Medina's family and said, "It’s inspiring to see how they’ve handled this with grace and prayerful thought."
"Initial trauma to his head was significant and caused him to lose consciousness and as he lost consciousness he lost his ability to maintain his airway," Cormican said of Medina's condition.
