NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: On the July 12 episode of the 'TODAY Show', Democratic South Carolina Rep Jim Clyburn defended President Joe Biden, asserting that the president's mind remains sharp and that his occasional missteps are due to his stutter, not cognitive decline as per Daily Caller.

This comes after Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “President Putin” and confused Vice President Kamala Harris with former President Donald Trump during a speech on July 11.

Jim Clyburn defends Joe Biden's speech as stutter-related

During the show, Jim Clyburn emphasized that Joe Biden is exceptionally sharp and that such errors are related to his lifelong stutter rather than any mental deterioration.

“Those of us who are real close watchers of Joe Biden, we do know that he sometimes mangled words and phrases. But all of that is almost natural for people who grew up stuttering and they do focus a little more. And when you focus a little more, you tend to lose the flow,” Clyburn said.

“But you’re not saying what we’ve seen from this president in the last three weeks is just a function of him stuttering?” NBC host Craig Melvin asked. “It’s more than that.”

There has been growing pressure from Democrats for Biden to consider stepping aside from the presidential race following concerns about his cognitive ability stemming from his debate performance against former President Donald Trump on June 27.

“He doesn’t stutter now. He is still working to overcome the stuttering of his childhood,” Clyburn continued.

He added, “I’ve been around that condition for a long time and I know exactly how it operates. But he has one of the best minds that I’ve ever been around. And the people who have been around him will tell you that. So I would hope that we will focus on the substance of this man, rather than these sometimes misspoken words and phrases, and how he has run this country.”

Jim Clyburn's defense of Joe Biden sparks viewer criticism

Jim Clyburn's defense of Joe Biden's cognitive decline faced viewer backlash, with many calling his statements "lies."

One viewer said, "Biden’s number one - Gate Keeper."

Another viewer said, "And the moon landings were faked too...."

One viewer noted, "Rep Clyburn, shame on you! You know better, you know what a Racist Senator Joe was, but no it’s not about your constituents or the black community it’s all about The Party Power you enjoy! Sir you are pitiful and you’re using your good name to give cover for a corrupt scoundrel."

A follower observed, "Such incredible lies. Believe your own eyes."

One comment read, "Of course, coming from a progressive DEI employee."

Another comment read, "He’s really putting the lies deeper and deeper."

"No one believes your lies any longer, Jim," explained one person.
