WASHINGTON, DC: Late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel blasted CBS for firing veteran journalist Scott Pelley, accusing the network of abandoning its commitment to truth and rewarding political pressure instead.

The late-night host framed the dismissal as fallout from Pelley’s public defense of journalistic standards. His comments landed after Pelley accused CBS leadership of pushing unverified claims into politically sensitive reporting.

Jimmy Kimmel says CBS punished truth-telling

During this week's night monologue, Kimmel targeted what he called the network’s new leadership and argued Pelley was removed for standing up to them.

“Last night, the Trump suck-ups at CBS fired a great and deeply respected journalist, Scott Pelley, from his job at ‘60 Minutes,’” Kimmel said.

He praised Pelley for defending “truth and integrity” at a program he described as “the gold standard for broadcast journalism for 57 years”.

Kimmel also argued that Pelley reached a breaking point after several colleagues, including Tanya Simon, Draggan Mihailovich, Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega, were removed. “He had enough,” Kimmel said, adding that Pelley believed “the collapse of values at the top has become untenable”.

According to Kimmel, Pelley confronted new leadership directly during a staff meeting, a confrontation that was later reported publicly and ultimately preceded his firing.

Pelley, who joined ‘60 Minutes’ in 2004, was terminated after a clash with newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton.

According to the reports, Pelley told Bilton he would “never be welcome” at the program while questioning his qualifications in front of staff members.

CBS later ended Pelley’s employment “for cause” following a meeting with network leadership.

In a letter obtained by the press, Bilton accused Pelley of undermining the show’s future.

“Yesterday’s performative display of hostility — enacted in front of the staff instead of in a civil, private conversation — demonstrated that you have no interest in contributing to the future success of the show,” Bilton wrote.

CBS News chief Bari Weiss also defended the decision during a call with employees, saying Pelley’s actions damaged the foundation of “trust and mutual respect” inside the newsroom.

Scott Pelley claims management pushed unverified assertions

The dispute escalated further when Pelley issued a statement accusing management of interfering with editorial standards.

“New management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story,” Pelley wrote.

He also claimed he had been told “to include assertions that are unverified,” adding that he had repeatedly ignored or refused those instructions.

Pelley said the organization he spent years helping build no longer resembled the newsroom he once knew. “The leadership of 60 Minutes is no longer recognizable,” he wrote. “The principles I hold dear are gone, and so I must leave as well.”

Kimmel seized on those allegations as evidence that CBS was abandoning credibility rather than defending it, turning Pelley’s firing into a broader fight over whether one of America’s most prominent news programs can maintain public trust under its new leadership.
