Jimmy Kimmel jokes about Travis Kelce being Taylor Swift’s broke boyfriend after $34M contract extension
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce may have signed a staggering new contract, but he still has a long way to go to impress late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.
Despite being the highest-paid tight end in the NFL, Kimmel humorously suggested that Kelce’s financial status pales in comparison to his girlfriend, pop star Taylor Swift.
Jimmy Kimmel’s take on Travis Kelce’s new contract
On the May 1 episode of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live', Kimmel, 56, commented on Kelce’s recent two-year contract extension with the Chiefs. “Congratulations to Travis Kelce," he started.
“He is now the highest-paid tight end in the NFL," Kimmel continued. However, Kimmel humorously implied that Kelce’s impressive contract was overshadowed by his relationship with Swift, who is also 34.
Kimmel joked about the disparity in their earnings, saying Swift would consider Kelce’s contract amount to be "gum money," People reported.
“Can you imagine being in a relationship where you make $34 million and you’re still the broke boyfriend?” he quipped.
Forbes had named Swift, known for her hit song “Fortnight”, a billionaire in October 2023 and reported her net worth at $1.1 billion.
Jimmy Kimmel shows how Taylor Swift’s fans react to Travis Kelce’s contract extension
Kimmel highlighted the unusual aspects of dating a pop star of Swift’s stature. He showed a screenshot from Kelce’s emotional video announcing his career news.
“Another weird thing about dating Taylor Swift is you can be one of the great players of all time," he said and showed the comment.
There Swift’s fans, known as Swifties, posted affectionate messages, referring to the football player as “baby girl”, “sweet boy”, and “pookiest pookie.” Kimmel joked, “I’m not sure if he’s a football player or a kitten.”
Notably, Kelce inked a new two-year deal earlier this week with the Chiefs, making him the top-paid tight end in the NFL in terms of average annual value.
"I'm gonna love the next two years playing here in Kansas City," Kelce reacted to the deal on his 'New Hights' podcast on Wednesday, May 1.
"... I am so excited and so thankful to this organization for getting it done and making me feel appreciated and compensated the right way," he added, as per NFL.

One user pointed out the relative nature of wealth, stating, “In relative terms based on income comparison, he’s technically a dusty.”
However, some criticized Kimmel’s humor, with one user stating, “I know he’s kidding, but they have basically the same net worth. Kinda weird to joke about, but doesn’t surprise me since Kimmel isn’t funny.”

In the midst of all this, Kimmel didn’t forget to congratulate Swift on her recent achievements.
He noted that she was “the first artist in history to occupy all of the top 14 spots on Billboard’s Hot 100 list” and that “29 of the 31 tracks on her new album are in the top 50.”
