LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a political landscape rife with contention and absurdity, one figure stands out for her consistent ability to stir controversy and make headlines for all the wrong reasons: Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The Republican congresswoman from Georgia has made a name for herself by embracing conspiracy theories, spreading misinformation, and launching baseless attacks on public figures. Her latest target is Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading expert on infectious diseases.

Marjorie Taylor Greene's outrageous accusations and Jimmy Kimmel's response

During a recent House hearing about the US's Covid-19 pandemic response and the origins of the virus, Greene launched into a tirade against Fauci, accusing him of being complicit in what she called "mass murder" and demanding that he be stripped of his medical license and tried for crimes against humanity.

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel was among those who seized upon Greene's antics, using his platform to skewer her with his trademark wit and sarcasm.

In a segment on his show, Kimmel played a clip of Greene's diatribe against Fauci, punctuating it with biting commentary and incredulous reactions.

"Isn't she lovely?" Kimmel quipped, referring to Greene's absurd theatrics during the hearing, including her bizarre attempt to discredit Fauci by brandishing a document that appeared to be a menu from Cracker Barrel. "She's just such a sweetheart, that Marjorie Taylor Greene."

But Kimmel didn't stop there. He went on to highlight the sheer absurdity of Greene's accusations against Fauci, pointing out the glaring lack of evidence to support her claims. "Poor Dr. Fauci had to sit there and listen to this," Kimmel lamented.

"The gaspacho police?" Kimmel quipped in response to Greene's assertion that Fauci should be tried for crimes against humanity. "I mean, people voted for this woman. Thousands of people voted for this ham in a can come to life."

"The concept of there being a lab leak is not inherently a conspiracy theory," Fauci said during the hearing, addressing Greene's claims. "What is conspiracy is the kind of distortions of that particular subject, like it was a lab leak and I was parachuted into the CIA like Jason Bourne."

"You know what, if you're going to start quoting Matt Damon movies, I'm out," Kimmel joked in response to Fauci's reference to the character Jason Bourne played by the actor in movies. "You're on your own. Good luck."

Public Outcry: calls for accountability and removal

The online response to Marjorie Taylor Greene's antics has been overwhelmingly critical, with users across various platforms expressing their frustration and outrage.

One user wrote, "MTG is an embarrassment to Georgia and the country."

One user replied, "Marjorie Taylor Greene is CRAZY. Voters of Georgia's 14th congressional district, vote her OUT OF OFFICE ! "
