WASHINGTON, DC: On Sunday, July 14, President Biden said he was relieved that former president Donald Trump is "doing well" after surviving an assassination attempt the previous night.

He stressed the importance of "unity" in this challenging time, reiterating his commitment to national cohesion despite political differences.

President Joe Biden revealed that he had spoken with the Secret Service, instructing them to provide Trump with every necessary "resource" to ensure his safety following the shooting. Additionally, the President directed the Secret Service to intensify security measures at the upcoming Republican National Convention.

“I’ve directed an independent review of national security at yesterday’s rally to assess exactly what happened and we’ll share the results of that independent review with the American people as well,” Biden announced from the White House. “We also extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who was killed. He was a father, who was protecting his family from the bullets that were being fired.”

In his White House address, Biden reiterated his dedication to fostering unity across the nation. He mentioned that he would be delivering further remarks on this theme from the Oval Office later that night. Furthermore, the President rescheduled his planned trip to Texas on Monday to focus on the current situation.

The assassination attempt occurred on Saturday, July 13 evening, during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was shot in the upper ear by a gunman identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who had positioned himself opposite the rally.

Trump narrowly avoided a more severe injury by moving at the last moment and ducking down after being hit. Tragically, one audience member was fatally shot.

Biden swiftly altered his weekend plans following the attempt on Trump's life. He returned to the White House from his home in Rehoboth, Delaware, after addressing the incident at a police station.

During his speech, Biden condemned the violence, stating, “Look, there’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening [sic]. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.”

He further elaborated, “The bottom line is that the Trump rally was a rally that he should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem. But the idea, the idea that there’s political violence, or violence in America like this is just unheard of, is just not appropriate.”

Despite their political rivalry, Biden and Trump spoke on the phone on Saturday night after the latter was safely escorted away from the rally.

The assassination attempt came amid mounting pressure on Biden from Congressional Democrats and close allies to suspend his 2024 presidential bid, following a challenging debate against Trump on June 27.

While the attempt on Trump’s life temporarily halted discussions among Democrats about Biden’s campaign, the President continued to focus on the immediate crisis. Senator Chuck Schumer was even seen meeting with Biden in Rehoboth on Saturday, indicating ongoing strategic discussions, the New York Post reported.

Internet reacts to Joe Biden increasing Donald Trump's security

Initially, the White House referred to the shooting as an “incident” as news spread on Saturday. This choice of words, coupled with reports that Biden had increased Trump’s Secret Service protection, sparked a flurry of reactions on social media. Many questioned the adequacy of Trump’s prior security and expressed skepticism about the quality of the protection.

"So this would imply he did not have appropriate resources. Shocking and disgraceful," one posted on X.

"Soooo Biden gave him more 'Girl Scouts' in other words," another wrote.

"More chubby DEI hires? No thanks. Get some navy seals and green berets in there," someone else insisted.

"Trying to look like the good guy Meanwhile he created the problem, either directly or indirectly," read a comment.

"Don’t trust this man, Trump! Private security detail," another chimed in.

There were a few, however, who lauded the move by Biden.

"Thanks! Mr President Biden and making sure the former president has protection," one commented.

"This is a very positive gesture from the President of the nation," another remarked.

"Another good move by Biden; he said the right thing and did the right thing—can’t say the same for other members of his party, especially the chronically online resistance libs who’ve seemingly gone insane," someone else offered.
