Joe Biden set to make case for Kamala Harris' succession during his Chicago DNC speech next week
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: President Joe Biden's role at the Democratic National Convention next week will be significantly altered by his decision to withdraw his bid for a second term, but his message about the importance of this election will sound familiar, according to several of the President's officials.
During his keynote speech on Monday, August 19, the departing president will highlight their achievements over the previous four years to support Vice President Kamala Harris' candidacy to succeed him.
Joe Biden still believes Donald Trump poses grave 'threat to democracy'
However, insiders say that Joe Biden will also state unequivocally that he continues to feel that Republican nominee Donald Trump poses a serious threat to American democracy and that delegates in Chicago, and Americans throughout the nation should do their bit to defeat him again in November.
“After saving democracy in 2020, President Biden is determined to defeat the threat to democracy posed by Donald Trump,” one official said, per NBC News.
What will the first day of Chicago DNC include?
As Joe Biden is ready to retire from public service after fifty years, there will be several honors to him on the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
A few weeks ago, the whole conference was focused on supporting the argument for extending that service for a further four years. However, this presents an additional chance for the president to attempt to mold his legacy.
Over the weekend, the president will be at Camp David, honing his address with the assistance of top aides, chief speechwriters Vinay Reddy and Mike Donilon among them. The speech will strengthen the point Biden made in the Oval Office shortly after withdrawing from the race and present a compelling argument for Harris and Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota.
Officials state that the speech will serve as a reminder of how crucial it was for Biden to support Harris right away after declaring he would withdraw from the race, to rally a fractured party behind her historic candidacy.
Biden's sources told NBC News that despite his intense efforts to stay in the race following his dismal debate performance, he can now hand the baton to Walz and her after his speech at the convention on the first night. “The president is pleased at the momentum behind the campaign and looks forward to making his case,” an official said.
Chicago DNC will highlight the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris' record
Joe Biden's allies, however, think that in order to set themselves apart from the Republican ticket, the convention will continue to emphasize the Biden-Harris record after he departs.
“Four years ago, America was reeling from a once-in-a-century pandemic, isolated on the world stage, crime was up, the middle class sidelined,” an official said. “Today: We are the global engine of growth, our alliances are strong, violent crime rate is at a 50-year low, border crossings are lower than when the previous administration left office, and we are making progress on the issues Americans care about most.”
Joe Biden's family will join the President at Chicago DNC
The President and First Lady Jill Biden, who will speak before her husband, will be joined by members of the Biden family.
In addition, Biden's longtime allies and supporters will be flying from Delaware together on a chartered plane to hear the address. Several aides have planned a party in Chicago on Monday night for them as well as other current and past staff members.
Commemorative items from the convention that were meant to further Biden's candidacy will still be present, such as a logo inspired by his 2020 campaign.
Additionally, "Cup of Joe" coffee will be given to each convention delegate, and on Monday, signs throughout the United Center will feature quotes from Biden's Oval Office speech, including "History is in your hands" and the family motto "Spread the faith."
Joe Biden will leave Chicago after his DNC speech
Joe Biden will spend the remainder of the week in Southern California after leaving Chicago following his speech on Monday, August 19. There, he will meet with senior advisors who have been working with him for the past month to finalize plans for the months he will be in office.
A Biden official said the president “will have an extensive domestic schedule — traveling across the country to keep reminding Americans that they are going to have to choose between his vision and the vice president’s vision to move the country forward, not backward.”
“And the president will fight to make every day of his term count to build on these historic achievements,” the official added. “Expect aggressive implementation of historic legislation, actions to lower costs, and a packed foreign policy agenda.”
Joe Biden mocked as reports state he will make a forceful case for Kamala Harris
Netizens scorned the US President as he will reportedly make the case for Kamala Harris to succeed him during his address at the Democratic National Convention next week.
One X user tweeted, "I don’t think he can make a forceful case for anything. I’m sure you’ll be fawning over it though." Another wrote, "He's going to make a forceful case for not allowing him to talk on a teleprompter and that he needs to go home and maybe nap."
"Biden body double scheduled for assignment," remarked one, while someone else added, "Straight from the teleprompter. He probably had a team of 20 assistants prepping him for his teleprompter reading all week."
