MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Elton John passionately condemned anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric during an event with President Joe Biden in New York on Friday, June 28, using an expletive. President Biden responded with a lighthearted hand gesture.

The legendary singer’s outburst came as he addressed the crowd at the opening of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center in Greenwich Village.

"As President Biden has reminded us, today, too, we face one of those seminal moments," John said, setting the tone for his fiery speech. "Do we stand up for our vision and our values, or let misinformation and senseless scapegoating turn back the clock? No f**king way!"

President Biden, standing nearby, laughed, applauded, and even made a humorous sign of the cross in response to John's emphatic statement.

The event marked the inauguration of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center, the first LGBTQ+ visitor center within the National Park Service network.

The center focuses on preserving and commemorating the legacy of the Stonewall Inn, where the pivotal 1969 rebellion catalyzed significant advancements in the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

In his remarks, President Biden reflected on the significance of the Stonewall uprising, noting that the "soul of the nation was literally tested" by those events.

"The heart of this movement was ignited and the course of history has changed forever," he said. "We remain in a battle for the soul of America. But I look around at the pride, hope, and light that all of you bring, I know this is a battle we’re going to win."

Elton John expressed deep honor at participating in the event, stating, "It’s one of the biggest honors of my life to be here today, having watched what took place 55 years ago."

The opening of the visitor center coincides with a troubling increase in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the United States. More than 500 bills of this nature have been introduced in state legislatures this year alone, a trend John characterized as "disgraceful."
