CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: John Legend's tribute performance of Prince's 'Let's Go Crazy' on the third night of the Democratic National Convention failed to impress fans.

The 45-year-old Grammy winner took the stage alongside singer and drummer Sheila E just before Minnesota Governor Tim Walz delivered his first major speech at the United Center on Wednesday, August 21, as per the New York Post.

Legend's performance of Prince's classic 'Let's Go Crazy,' which paid homage to the legendary Minnesota singer, was intended as a tribute to the Gopher State, where Tim Walz has served as governor since 2019.

However, despite the effort, fans were left underwhelmed by the 'All of Me' singer's rendition of the iconic 80s hit.

John Legend's lackluster performance of Prince's iconic song

'Let's Go Crazy' by Prince and his band The Revolution is from the 1984 album 'Purple Rain.' The song became one of the most popular hits, solidifying its place as a foremost in concert performances.

The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks, marking it as his second song to reach the number one position, following the success of 'When Doves Cry' from the same 'Purple Rain' album.

Prince, a beloved son of Minnesota, was born and raised in Minneapolis. He died in 2016 at the age of 57 due to an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota.

California-based singer Sheila E, who performed the hit song alongside Legend at the DNC, had collaborated with Prince at the early stage of her career.

Before his performance, John Legend, a strong supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris, praised her as a "smart, charismatic, and empathetic" choice who is fully capable of serving as commander-in-chief during an interview on CBS Mornings.

"She is eminently qualified to be president," he said. "And then she also has the right character traits I think to be a great president, which means she cares about people’s lives, wants government to work for people and improve their lives."

"John legend is waaaaayyyy too corny to pull off Prince. That felt like a karaoke performance. Guitar solo ripped tho," another opined.

"Prince would be appalled actually.. that was terrible. John sounded more like elvis," an individual chimed in.

"Horrendous. A mockery of Prince," someone else remarked.

"Proof that having the word 'legend' in one's name neither makes them a legend, nor enables them to imitate one!" another user said.

"Prince is rolling in his grave for the horrible performance tonight. He sounded terrible," read one remark.
