John Stamos shares update on Mike Love's health challenges
The Beach Boys played their first public concert in three months Saturday in Cincinnati following a series of delays and cancellations during their reunion tour. Love had previously said he needed to "recharge" amid the tour.
Stamos, who has performed as a guest with the group since the Eighties, addressed the crowd before the Cincinnati show, revealing that Love "has been going through some health issues." However, he insisted on performing.
Stamos then walked Love onto the stage, where the singer sat and remained for the rest of the performance. On Sunday, Stamos confirmed in an Instagram post that he would attend the band's concert in Nashville and said Love planned to take the stage despite his health problems.
“I’m boarding a plane to Nashville to play with the Beach Boys at the Ryman Auditorium, struggling to put my feelings into words," Stamos wrote. "My beloved friend, father figure, musical hero and mentor, Mike Love, is facing serious health challenges. We hope he'll be doing what he loves for years to come, but we don't know what the future holds. We have tonight."
Stamos described Love as a fighter, noting that the musician insisted on performing despite doctors, family and friends urging him to focus on his health.
"He says he needs his band, the audience, his friends and drummer surrounding him to lift him up," the actor continued.
John Stamos reflects on 41 years of music with Mike Love
Stamos also reflected on his 41 years of making music with Love and the impact of watching his longtime friend face health difficulties.
"I never imagined how deeply it would affect me to see someone larger than life face something so human and fragile," he wrote.
While acknowledging that Love might not appear exactly as fans had always known him, Stamos emphasized that his friend remained just as loved.
"The Mike Love we see tonight may not be exactly the Mike we've always known. But he's still every bit the Mike we love," Stamos said.
He also praised Love's lyrics, optimism and unforgettable hooks, noting that the musician's more than 7,000 concerts had brought joy to generations. Stamos described Love's personal influence on him as immeasurable, adding that his friend had made him a better musician, entertainer and man.
Stamos explained that his life with Love and the Beach Boys had become part of his identity. He also felt entrusted with preserving the group's extraordinary music and carrying it to new generations. As he prepared to share the stage with Love at the Nashville concert, Stamos expressed his wish to remain fully present and appreciate their time together.
"Maybe the hardest part of loving someone is becoming so accustomed to the miracle of having them there that you forget it's a miracle at all," he wrote. "Tonight, I won't forget. I want to cherish every second without feeling those seconds slipping away. That's what I'm giving him. We don't know what tomorrow brings. But we have tonight."
