NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Senator Bob Menendez, currently embroiled in a federal corruption trial, has sparked controversy by personally gathering signatures for a nominating petition to secure a spot on the ballot as an independent candidate.

Confirmed recently by the New Jersey Globe, Menendez has enlisted the help of acquaintances from his hometown of Union City to endorse his bid for re-election outside the Democratic party.

Menendez, who announced his intention to explore an independent bid just days before the Democratic primary filing deadline, needs to gather 800 registered voter signatures by June 4.

This move not only preserves his option to keep his Senate seat but also potentially alters the dynamics of the November election, should a three-way race emerge.

With his trial anticipated to extend into late June, Menendez has until August 16 to withdraw his candidacy without appearing on the ballot, affording him ample time for deliberation. However, uncertainties loom over Menendez's campaign, including the level of support he commands.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MARCH 11: Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and his wife Nadine Menendez depart a Manhattan court following an arraignment on new charges in the federal bribery case against them on March 11, 2024 in New York City. Menendez and his wife are accused of taking bribes of gold bars, a luxury car and cash in exchange for using Menendez's position to help the government of Egypt and other corrupt acts according to an indictment from SDNY. The indictment is the second in eight years against Menendez. The indictment also includes charges for Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

One of the primary hurdles facing Menendez's independent bid is financial. Despite amassing over $8.5 million in funds before his indictment in September 2023, his legal expenses have substantially depleted his resources.

Recent filings with the Federal Election Commission revealed a bank balance of less than $3.6 million, with a significant portion allocated to legal defense fees. The senator has already paid $2 million to his defense team at Paul Hastings and nearly $65,000 to Haystack ID, a forensic and electronic discovery firm.

Menendez stands accused of accepting various bribes, including cash, gold bars, and a luxury vehicle, in exchange for leveraging his political influence. These allegations suggest misuse of his position as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to benefit his alleged benefactors.
