LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Vice President Kamala Harris's family history reveals a rather interesting ancestry linked to slavery. Her paternal great-grandmother, Christiana Brown, was a descendant of Hamilton Brown, a notorious Irish slave owner and the founder of Brown’s Town in Jamaica.

Kamala Harris's father and Stanford economist Donald Harris shared in a 2019 article for the Jamaica Globe that his grandmother, Miss Chrishy (nee Christiana Brown), was a descendant of Hamilton Brown.

"My roots go back, within my lifetime, to my paternal grandmother Miss Chrishy (nee Christiana Brown), a descendant of Hamilton Brown who is on record as plantation and slave owner and founder of Brown's Town, a town in Jamaica," he stated.

Donald Harris, 85, was born in Brown’s Town, per the vice president's 2019 book 'The Truths We Hold: An American Journey'.

Hamilton Brown's life and Kamala Harris's mixed heritage

Hamilton Brown, born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in 1776, migrated to Jamaica as a teenager. According to the University College London’s Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery, he became a prominent sugar plantation owner and a notable figure in the slave trade.

Brown's notoriety stems from his staunch opposition to the abolition of slavery. He even traveled to London to lobby against the anti-slavery movement.

Northern Irish historian Stephen McCracken told the Belfast Telegraph, "Hamilton-Brown was a notorious figure and not a nice fellow."

"Hamilton was born in Antrim, just north of Ballymoney, before he moved to Jamaica as a teenager. That's where he became a bookmaker, and then a plantation owner, and therefore a slave owner," he added.

"His gravestone is in Saint Ann in Jamaica, which lists his birthplace as Antrim. He had numerous slaves, in fact, Hamilton Brown routinely traveled back and forth to London to protest the abolishment of slavery. He would come back to Ireland to take migrants back to Jamaica to work once slavery was abolished. A quote refers to him as 'making slaves of migrants' in Ireland," McCracken added.

In 1826, Brown owned at least 121 slaves. Despite the United Kingdom abolishing slavery in 1833, former slaves were bound to their owners until 1838. For his losses, Brown received £24,144, equivalent to $3.7 million today, under the Slave Compensation Act of 1837. He died in 1843 and was buried in the Anglican graveyard in Brown’s Town, Jamaica, according to the Gleaner.

Reuters reported that Kamala Harris is likely descended from both slaves and slave owners. The prevalence of sexual violence by plantation owners against their female slaves has resulted in many African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans having Anglo or Irish ancestry, as noted by the Belfast Telegraph.

Kamala Harris blasted online for her lineage

Upon discovering Kamala Harris’ ancestral ties to Hamilton Brown, social media users criticized the Vice President and called her a "beneficiary of slavery".

"According to the woke catechism, Kamala is the beneficiary of slavery so she needs to denounce her privilege and 'step aside,'" one user posted on X.

"So she's a racist and should pay reparations!" another wrote.

"Explains a lot," read one comment.

"Yes, her father has OPENLY spoken about this. She kept true to her ancestors' slavery mindset as prosecutor too, keeping inmates in longer for free state labor," someone else alleged.

"She is a complete fraud," another chimed in.

A 2023 survey revealed that over 100 US political elites, including five living presidents and two US Supreme Court justices, descended from slave owners. If Harris is elected president, she would join a lineage of Oval Office occupants with connections to Ireland, including outgoing President Joe Biden, who has been vocal about his Irish roots, per the New York Post.

“There was so much migration over the years, I think over one-third of the population of the north left Ireland at one point,” McCracken noted.
